Antique Banded Agate Cameo Cufflinks or Buttons in 14K Gold with Monogram
About the Item
Offered is an elegant pair of Victorian hand carved cameo cufflinks or buttons, estimated to date to 1870 or so. Set in rosy yellow 14K gold, each backing has a hand engraved monogram of "SAL." These would also be lovely converted into a pair of earrings.
Each cameo is carved into a tablet of banded carnelian agate that has a white/pale grey band on the top surface and the more common deep orange beneath. This results in the classic maidens having a white appearance, and their background having an especially lovely and less common pale lilac or lavender color.
Not quite mirror images as there are slight differences due to being hand carved, the maidens wear diadems and have curling hair held in place with a snood, as well as drop earrings and a pearl or bead necklace. The carving of the silhouettes remain nice and crisp, with just a little old dirt I am still trying to remove. (these were found very dirty and grimy) However, the edges of the round tablets of agate do show loss and chipping, so some of the white border is missing in places. (the edges could be sanded down, if a more uniform look is desired)
Bezel set, with an outer gold border, each has a button back in gold with hand engraved intertwined letters of "SAL."
Measuring approximately 3/4 of an inch in diameter (19.96 mm), one of the cufflinks buttons sits a little higher than the other which appears to be original to when they were made. The gold is in good condition with some patina and light superficial wear; there is one small hairline where two pieces of gold meet on the back of one cufflink, but it doesn't go through all the way.
On my scale, the finished weight of the pair is 10.06 grams.
