A Pair of Natural Pearl, Opal, Diamond and Enamel Gold Earrings as part of the Selene Suite by Jewelry Designer, Sarah Ho. The Selene pieces capture the luminescent beauty of the natural pearls - these pearls range in color from apricot to lavender - an exceptional range of colors for this gem. Originally from an antique pearl necklace - these pearls were arranged by Sarah with opals and diamonds for a subtle yet impactful palette. Named after the Greek Lunar Goddess due to the ethereal hues and scattering of light from the diamonds. The whole piece is crafted from a champagne tone 18ct gold. The two natural pearls at the studs are rare for their size and color - one has a concealed Emperors drill - which means it was most likely first used as a button for a royal figure, the other's original use is unknown, but due to it's size was most likely in a tiara. Natural pearls are incredibly rare, only 1 in 10,000 (non-farmed) oysters will ever produce a pearl, and only a small fraction of those will be of gem quality. Before the creation of the cultured pearl by Mikimoto in 1893, pearl divers would search the depths of the Arabian Gulf to seek out these jewels of the sea. The island of Bahrain was the centre of trade for these gems, and it remains today the capital for Natural pearls. Having grown-up in Macau, Sarah moved to London to study fashion and jewelry design. Her interest in jewelry was ignited by the jewel collections of the iconic women in her family. Sarah went on to study gemmology in Antwerp, preparing her to launch her fine jewelry company in 2006. The gemstones and diamonds take precedence in each of Sarah’s designs; whether it be an array of faceted and cabochon stones with diamond capped beads, Paraiba tourmalines graduating from sea green to sky blue or the ring with the rare natural rainbow pearl amidst the rose cut diamonds. Sarah hand-paints each design concept, dreaming-up alluring color combinations and striking silhouettes. Romantic and contemporary arrangements of pearls, diamonds and gems are crafted in to vibrant motifs with her signature enamel patterns, lacework and precious beads; culminating in to a unique and remarkable jewel. Often led by the stone for the design, Sarah takes care to source her gems responsibly and ethically - whether it’s charitable initiatives or reimagining an old piece.
