This Symbolist jewel portrays the outcome of the Greek myth of Clytie and the Sun God Apollo.
Clytie a water nymph who is deeply in love with Apollo transforms into a sunflower so that she may gaze at the beautiful face of Apollo all day.
Little is known about Gautrait?s life and training, except that he worked for the jeweller Léon Gariod, Paris from 1897-1920. In 1905 he ceased to work in the Art Nouveau style. Important jewels with his signature have survived and are a testimony of the high standard of his workmanship, as in this jewel. He was an equal to the great names of the Art Nouveau period, such as Rene Lalique and Philippe Wolfers who were both renowned for their exquisite enamel work.
