Trifari AlfredPhilippe GoldDemiParure TasselEarrings & CrystalDiamanteLinkCollar

About the Item

For Trifari by mid-century, its artistic director French-born Alfred Philippe designed this yellow-gold set including the seven-bar linked collar with central invisibly-set diamante, along with the tasseled drop earrings that are signed with the crown symbol above the brand name on their French clips. The Art-Deco style and fine craftsmanship of these pieces reflect some of Philippe's pre-1930s goldsmithing and diamond-setting techniques for Van Cleef & Arpels and Cartier, which he is credited with introducing to costume jewelry. Enabling lots of movement, the dangling parts of the 2-inch-long earrings hang below a shiny convex semi-circle, which drops to a smooth smaller ball that tops the 3/4-inch-diameter fluted-cap tassel with its more textural bunch of irregular-length chains. The central curved bar of the complimentary unsigned lustrous golden collar is invisibly set with a silver-foiled channel of clear crystals cut into faceted squares. The stirrup-like ends of the 2-inch bars with textured backs are linked by curled clips, whose shape is echoed by the fold-over clasp at the back of the neck. Only the dimensions of the necklace are specified in the Measurement-Units section of this listing. The lack of a U.S.-copyright symbol dates the set prior to 1955. In 1948, Trifari began using its patented shiny non-tarnishing metal alloy called Trifarium as a casting base for gold plating, while our gold-gilt earrings with points of verdigris visible on the interior of the clips predate this. As the crown stamp over the Trifari text was first used in the brand signature in 1937 in homage to Philippe's crown-shaped brooches that had become best sellers, they do not date earlier. Please see our other listings for additional crown Trifari necklaces, earrings and sets designed by Philippe between 1937-1955.

  • Early Renoir MidCentury Copper Stylized Tulip 18 Link Choker Necklace
    By Renoir
    Located in Chicago, IL
Without a post-1955 copyright symbol and with the brand's earliest script signature, this likely late 1940s signed Renoir shiny copper choker necklace features 18 links each stylized as a tulip flowerhead in a modernized bolder Art Nouveau style. The American jewelry company's exclusive durable "Copron" finishing on the top of the links prevents tarnishing and fingerprints. The functional tiny linear links and the reverse side of the necklace were meant to remain blackened, while a black signature is impressed on the underside of the fold-over clasp. Comparatively without the additional enamel decoration of the company's post-1952 jewelry line signed Matisse...

  • Georgian Berlin Iron and Mirrored Cut Steel Necklace and Earring Set
    Located in Narberth, PA
Berlin iron jewelry was produced in Germany by the Berlin Royal Foundry beginning in 1804. Previously, iron jewelry had been worn primarily during periods of mourning due to the dark color of its black lacquer finish. However, it reached a high point of popularity between 1813 and 1830. To fund the War of Liberation against Napolean, citizens were asked to donate their precious gold in exchange for iron jewelry. The Berlin iron jewelry was sometimes inscribed with a portrait of Frederick William III of Prussia, or with the words "Gold gab ich für Eisen" (meaning "I gave gold for iron") or "Für das Wohl des Vaterlands" ("For the welfare of our country/fatherland"). Almost overnight, Berlin iron jewelry became a symbol of patriotism. Its beautiful fabrication and lacy appearance gave it widespread appeal, eventually reaching popularity in numerous European countries. Authentic Berlin iron jewelry is now very rare, and well-preserved pieces have become very collectible! Cut steel jewelry originated in England in the 17th century and subsequently spread throughout Europe, eventually becoming a popular style of jewelry worn by members of high society during the Victorian era. Made of polished faceted steel studs, the pieces were cut by hand and then assembled and riveted onto a metal back. The faceted steel elements give this type of jewelry a subtle, metallic glitter that resembles cut gemstones. Motifs varied from the simple to the sublime, with multiple layers and densely packed studs. The time-consuming process and the artistry required to create cut steel jewelry made it very valuable and highly sought-after during the Victorian age, particularly to wear during the stage of "secondary mourning." Produced up until the turn of the 19th century, antique cut steel jewelry is now highly collectible. An exceptional Berlin iron and cut steel necklace and earring set from the Georgian (ca1804) era! Crafted in fine Berlin ironwork with delicate cut steel studs and mirrored steel plaques throughout, this well-preserved ensemble is an incredible work of art. The ornate necklace adorns various sized iron-backed links topped with mirrored steel plaques, each one connected together by intricate, lacy Berlin ironwork. The largest link rests at the center, and features an oval-shaped mirrored steel plaque on the front that is adorns a raised iron cameo...
