15mm Barrel-Shaped Tahitian Pearl Fob in Gold with Aquamarine & Zircon Chain
About the Item
We got this outrageous Tahitian pearl at a 2023 jewelry trade show from Continental Pearls. Continental, founded in 1966, has offices in Japan, Hong Kong and Los Angeles, and deals exclusively in cultured saltwater and high-end freshwater pearls.
It's 15.1mm wide and just under 21mm long. That's fairly large, though not huge, by current Tahitian pearl standards, but there are three factors that put this pearl in the Delicious cateogry:
First, the shape: Neither a drop nor a round, this pearl is pleasingly barrel-shaped -- an unusual silhouette for a pearl this size.
Second, those ridges. Could a pearl match its bale better?
Third, that color: From black with strong green and blue overtones to glossy white, but the color change isn't gradual; it's a pronounced switch.
A pearl like this doesn't want a lot of fuss and feathers so Eytan topped it with his simple "donut stack" cap -- a design he's used before with pearls but which has never mirrored the pearl so endearingly.
The round bale is big enough to accommodate most chain hardware, but we've paired it with an 18" beaded necklace of blue zircon* and aquamarine, chosen specifically to match the ethereal colors of this gorgeous pearl. The beads are sparkly 4mm rondelles, and the necklace has been professional strung on grey silk thread with a 14 karat lobster clasp.
If you prefer something simpler, we have on hand a 16" 3mm black rubber cord (photo provided) or an 18.5" 3mm black leather cord. Both of these cords have 14 karat lobster clasps and can be substituted for the aqua/zircon chain. Just let us know before you check out. There is no difference in price for any of these options.**

The pearl's flaws are limited to a discolored pit located between two of the center ridges (visible in the second-to-last photo in our array) and a faint line running between two ridges, located near the pit. Both of these flaws can be worn facing backward. The front-facing side is clean, smooth and lustrous as can be. In our "coin" photo, you'll also see what looks like a small pit, but it's not discolored (despite the way it looks in the photo) and barely visible in normal lighting situations.
*If you're not familiar with zircon, it's an earth-mined stone that rivals diamond for brilliance. It also comes in a range of gorgeous colors. It is NOT the same as cubic zirconium, which is a man-made stone.
