About the Item

Sixty 22k gold tube beads alternating with thirty groupings of lapis lazuli, turquoise beads, and thirty carnelian barrel-shaped beads. The turquoise and lapis module consists of a small turquoise disc bead faced on either side with a similarly sized lapis lazuli bead. The module is seven millimeters in length; the individual beads are two and three millimeters in length. The width of the beads is 3 mm. The carnelian beads are 4 mm in length and 3 mm in width. The drill hole diameters are 1 mm. The center pendant is 1.5 cm in height, 1 cm in width and 5 mm in thickness. The necklace contains the four colors that were favored in ancient Egyptian jewelry for their amuletic properties: light blue turquoise (the sky), dark blue lapis lazuli (water), red orange carnelian (fire, blood) and gold (the sun). All are life promoting. The carnelian pendant depicts a heart. The heart was thought to be the seat of the soul; the amulet is meant to protect the soul of the wearer. The ancient Egyptians believed that the life force or soul resided in the heart. Although we today believe that the consciousness resides in the brain, we still use phrases like “heartfelt emotion” that reveal the ancient belief that the feeling and perceiving self resides in the heart. We still associate the heart with love in spite of the fact that we know that its function is to pump the blood throughout the body. The necklace is 24 5/8 inches (62.8 cm) in length. The necklace weighs 14 grams.
