Ancient Greek 5th Century BC Athena Owl Coin 18K Gold Pendant
About the Item
An authentic silver Ancient Greek Athenian owl coin from 475-425 BC is held in a hand textured double hammered bezel signature Steven Battelle 18K gold pendant design. This TOP-GRADE iconic coin from Athens, Attica, is a tetradrachm (4 drachms) which was the primary coinage in much of the ancient world during that age. The reverse of the coin (the side shown) is the owl (Athene noctua) traditionally representing or accompanying Athena, the virgin goddess of wisdom. The opposite side of the coin features the helmeted Athena herself, in the classical "almond eye" portrayal of early and archaic Athens. The "owl of Athena" is a symbol of knowledge, wisdom, perspicacity and erudition throughout the Western world. This pendant comes with a laminated lifetime coin certificate of authenticity. The hammered 18K chain, or woven 22K chain shown, is not included, but can be ordered additionally.

After a chance trip to SouthEast Asia in 1987, Steven Battelle became fascinated with the jewelry and iconology from the ancient cultures of Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, and Asia. Eventually forming a partnership with a dedicated group of Balinese village goldsmiths using painstaking handmade techniques, they together create unique designs that incorporate those timeless and classic motifs. He incorporates primarily cabochon gemstones as well as ancient Greek and Roman coins, each piece capturing the feelings of a bygone age.
