Ancient Greek 5th Century BC Athena Owl Coin Diamonds 22K Gold Pendant
About the Item
An iconic top-grade authentic ancient Greek Athenian owl coin from 475-425 BC is held in an ancient-inspired handmade 22K hammered gold setting with flat wire spirals and five 1.8 mm VS1 diamonds accents in this signature design from artist Steven Battelle. This coin from Athens, Attica, is a silver tetradrachm (4 drachms) which was the primary coinage in much of the ancient world during that age. Athens controlled the rich silver mines at Laurion during those times and issued this coin in its classic period. The beautiful reverse of the coin (the side shown) is the owl (Athene noctua) traditionally representing or accompanying Athena, the virgin goddess of wisdom. Because of such association, the bird - often referred to as the "owl of Athena" is a symbol of knowledge, wisdom, perspicacity and erudition throughout the Western world. The opposite side depicts Athena herself in a crested Corinthian helmet. The 20 inch 1.8 mm handmade woven 22K chain shown with the pendant is not currently included, but can be added to the listing. We discount our chains 20% when ordered with a pendant. This pendant is sent with a laminated coin certificate of authenticity.

Steven Battelle
Using ancient coins and traditional Balinese gem setting techniques, Steven Battelle’s jewelry offers history in the palm of your hand. The American jewelry designer and his team create pieces inspired by and incorporating historic coinage and materials used in ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia and Asia.
Battelle first encountered cabochon stones, which are gemstones polished and shaped rather than faceted, on a trip to Southeast Asia in 1987. A predecessor of modern jewelry, cabochons inspired Battelle to pursue a jewelry hobby while continuing to work as a veterinarian for exotic animals.
He became fascinated with the ornamentation styles used by ancient Majapahit Java and Siam cultures, eventually transitioning from veterinarian work to designing jewelry full-time. He developed a partnership with Balinese jewelry makers, a collaboration which became a key component in realizing his designs.
The Balinese partners hand-make each piece using traditional methods that have been passed down for generations. While conventional blow torches and modern tools are used in much of the work, the heart of the jewelry’s creation is grounded in an artisanal approach.
