Ancient Roman Coin 2nd Cent. AD Pendant w/ rubies depicting Emp. Marcus Aurelius

About the Item

This sterling silver pendant holds an authentic Roman coin dating back to the 2nd century AD, depicting Emperor Marc'Aurelius, surrounded by 8 rubies. The reverse side showcases the seated Goddess Fortuna. Marcus Aurelius, Emperor from 161 to 180 AD, was not only a ruler but also a stoic philosopher. He stood as the final figure among the Five Good Emperors, overseeing the closure of the Pax Romana, a period marked by considerable peace and stability within the Roman Empire. His consulships occurred in 140, 145, and 161 AD. Born during Hadrian's rule to Marcus Annius Verus (III), nephew of the emperor, and Domitia Lucilla, an heiress, Marcus faced early loss, being raised by his mother and grandfather following his father's death. After Aelius Caesar's passing in 138 AD, Hadrian chose Marcus' uncle Antoninus Pius as his successor. Antoninus, in turn, adopted both Marcus and Lucius, Aelius' son (who later ruled as Emperor Lucius Verus alongside Marcus). With Hadrian's death that same year, Antoninus ascended as emperor. This placed Marcus as the heir to the throne, where he delved into studies of Greek and Latin under renowned tutors like Herodes Atticus and Marcus Cornelius Fronto. His correspondence with Fronto lasted many years. Marcus united with Antoninus' daughter Faustina in marriage in 145 AD, and upon Antoninus' passing due to illness in 161 AD, Marcus took up the mantle of emperor. Our jewelry store, Serra Roma, proudly presents an exquisite collection that beautifully honors the ancient traditions of Greek and Roman civilizations.
