Ancient Greek 2nd Century BCE Athena Owl Coin Diamonds 18K Gold Pendant
About the Item
A hand fabricated ancient-inspired design by Steven Battelle features an authentic ancient Greek Athenian owl silver "tetradrachm" in an 18K hammered shield design pendant with flat wire scrollwork and five 1.8 mm diamonds. The coin is from Athens, Attica, 138-137 BCE. The side shown depicts an Owl standing to right on amphora, with magistrates names in Greek letters and the goddess Demeter to right holding a torch. Demeter was the Olympian goddess of the harvest and agriculture, presiding over crops, grains, food, and the fertility of the earth. She also appeared as a goddess of health, birth, and marriage. The reverse of the coin is Athena in triple-crested Athenian helmet ornamented with Pegasus. The owl traditionally represents or accompanies Athena, the virgin goddess of wisdom. Because of such association, the bird—often referred to as the "owl of Athena" is a symbol of knowledge and wisdom throughout the Western world. This pendant comes with a lifetime laminated coin certificate of authenticity. The matching handmade hammered chain shown is not included, but can be ordered additionally. We discount our chains 20% when ordered with a pendant.

After a chance trip to SouthEast Asia in 1987, Steven Battelle became fascinated with the jewelry and iconology from the ancient cultures of Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, and Asia. Eventually forming a partnership with a dedicated group of Balinese village goldsmiths using painstaking handmade techniques, they together create unique designs that incorporate those timeless and classic motifs. He incorporates primarily cabochon gemstones as well as ancient Greek and Roman coins, each piece capturing the feelings of a bygone age.
