Ancient Greek 2nd Century BC Owl Coin Diamonds 18K Gold Pendant
About the Item
An authentic ancient Greek silver "tetradrachm" coin from Athens, Attica, 110-109 BC is set in a handmade ancient-inspired Steven Battelle 18K design with three 2mm VS1 diamonds at the sides and bottom accented with handmade "jawan" granulation. The coin side shown features an owl standing to right on amphora, Greek ATHE above and Magistrates name to left with facing cult statue of Apollo Delios, holding Three Graces and bow, all within wreath. The reverse displays Athena in triple-crested Athenian helmet ornamented with Pegasus. Delios is the Greek island where Apollo was purportedly born. The owl (Athene noctua) traditionally represents or accompanies Athena, the virgin goddess of wisdom. Because of such association, the bird—often referred to as the "owl of Athena" is a symbol of knowledge, wisdom, perspicacity and erudition throughout the Western world. This pendant comes with a lifetime laminated coin certificate of authenticity. The handmade hammered chain shown is not included, but can be ordered additionally. We discount our chains 20% when ordered with a pendant.

After a chance trip to SouthEast Asia in 1987, Steven Battelle became fascinated with the jewelry and iconology from the ancient cultures of Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, and Asia. Eventually forming a partnership with a dedicated group of Balinese village goldsmiths using painstaking handmade techniques, they together create unique designs that incorporate those timeless and classic motifs. He incorporates primarily cabochon gemstones as well as ancient Greek and Roman coins, each piece capturing the feelings of a bygone age.
