About the Item

Absolutely gorgeous in person, this glittery antique diamond pendant brooch is very large and special. I believe it was once part of a larger piece of jewelry dating to the late Georgian to early Victorian period. Crafted of silver and gold testing around 14K to 15K, the pendant brooch features a total of 132 antique diamonds - both cushiony old mine cut and old rose cut diamonds, for a total estimated carat weight of approximately 3.60 carats. Substantial and weighty, the tiered design has wonderful symmetry and an intricate design. It resembles a crowned crest with a fleur de lis at the apex. (the clasp folds down and the pin stem is designed to be removed when you wish to wear it as a pendant; the bail also folds down so is not visible when you want to wear it as a brooch. The versatility is a great feature.) Between the fire of the old cut diamonds, the elegant design and the sheer size of the pendant brooch - it's really an amazing piece. Weighing a very hefty 19.29 grams on my scale, the piece measures approximatley 1 7/8 x 1 1/4 inches (50.2 x 32.8 mm). As mentioned above, the design is beautifully tiered - making me think of an old fashioned wedding cake, with the total rise from the base approximately 14.4 mm. I've counted approximately 132 old cut diamonds, with most being old mine cut, and some bezel set old rose cut diamond accents. Surrounded by a halo of smaller diamonds, the center diamond is very chunky, super fiery and clean, measuring approximately 4.8 x 4.8 mm. It has a light yellow color that faces up slightly warm, and is estimated at approximately .50 carats. The next largest stone, also a cushion shaped old mine cut diamond, is white and fiery, measuring approximately 4.5 x 4 mm and estimated at approximately .42 carats. The smaller diamonds range in size from approximately 1.1 mm (the entire inner border) to approximately 2.8 mm. All are bright, eye-clean and fiery, of good quality and I see no missing stones. Under magnification I see only a few stones with chips/wear. The prongs show some expected wear but are in overall good condition for their age. The reverse has both a folding bail and a fold down "c" style clasp so you have the versatility of wearing this beauty as a large pendant or brooch. The pin stem remains nice and straight and works well, and is designed to be removed when you wish to wear the piece as a pendant. I believe the piece has had some alterations on the back over time, with the pin stem and clasp being added during the Victorian period, and done carefully. There is a little post at the top and a little spot on the bottom that indicate it was once part of a larger, likely older piece of jewelry. As expected with this period, no hallmarks are present but I have tested the metals in different spots to confirm purity.

Wear consistent with age and use. A few stones show wear/small chips under magnification.
