Antique Victorian 15K Gold and Carnelian Ornate Fob Charm Pendant
About the Item
An antique early Victorian 15 karat gold and carnelian fob pendant. This beautiful ornate fob with lions head and scrolling arches leading to an integral bail attached to a gold split ring. The large split ring is embellished with deeply carved patterns of floral and foliate design. The carnelian stone at the bottom of the fob is smooth and beautiful.
Fobs were used by wealthy Georgian and Victorian gentlemen. Often a fob would hold a pocket watch swung on a chain attached to the vest pocket on the other side of the vest. These fob chains often had small pendants - like seals - and these pendants themselves became known as fobs. Most seal fobs are made of metal or gold over metal. It makes sense, these needed to stand up to repeating pressure for stamping.
The fob is in very good condition and of high quality. The pendant measures 4.7 cm in height (incl. ring), 2.2 cm in length and 1.9 cm wide. The size of the chased split ring is 2.1 cm in diameter. The total weight of the fob and split ring is 19.55 grams. No hallmarks were found. The fob comes without the chain.
The fob will be gift-wrapped in a black and gold jewelry box.
