About the Item
Offered is a beautifully detailed Art Nouveau period enamel Pendant - Brooch Necklace. Set with rose cut diamonds & pearls, this floral/foliate motif piece offers elegance, fine workmanship and versatility. (the decorative bail may be removed, and the loop it attaches to folds down so it cannot be seen when worn as a brooch)
Testing as 18K gold (with a 14K gold pin, suspended from an antique 14K gold chain), the design features an enameled flower set with a button pearl, surrounded by a wonderful, enameled quatrefoil design accented by sparkly rose cut diamonds. Enameled leaves adorn the north, south, east and west points, with the matching original enamel bail above, and a dangling drop with both diamond and pearl, swaying below.
The lovely enamel remains in quite good, though not perfect condition - it shows a bit of expected wear, though no dramatic losses or repair. The shimmery green color of the leaves set off the varying shades of pink in the flower petals as well as the white enamel with delicate black accents. A little rosette at the top of the bail is also done in matching green with white/black detailing; the cap to the dangling pearl is white with linear black flourishes.
Measuring approximately 8 mm in diameter, the button pearl has a warm champagne color with blush undertones that complements the pink shades of enamel on the flower petals. The dangling pearl drop has a slight teardrop shape and a warm white color with slight blush pink undertones.
Each of the four smaller rose cut diamonds are approximately 2 mm in size, with the larger on the swaying drop measuring approximately 2.8 mm.
Substantial and with a sizable presence, when worn with the decorative bail as a pendant, the total drop length measures just over 2 1/16 of an inch (53 mm). When worn as a brooch with no bail, it measures approximately 1 3/4 x 1 3/16 of an inch (43 x 29.2 mm).
On the reverse is the original pin and clasp, along with a maker's mark of "A.P" in a small cartouche.
I've left it on the slender, delicate gold chain it came to me on, which measures a hair over 16 inches in length and closes with an old-style spring ring clasp, marked "14KT" that shows a bit of discoloration. (If you prefer a chunkier antique chain, please message me and I can send you photos of an approximately 18 inch heftier antique gold chain I also have available, as an additional purchase)
Together, the piece has a finished weight of 11.36 grams on my scale.
