Antique Celestial Star Pendant - Brooch Necklace Set in Fitted Case
About the Item
Offered is a beautifully detailed antique gold Celestial themed Pendant - Brooch - Necklace set in a period fitted box. I believe it dates to the Victorian period, though there is an added (later) inscription from 1906.
Finely made of 18K yellow gold, the large 6-pointed star is set with lustrous pearls and centered with an old mine cut diamond. Between each ray of the star is elegant gold scrolling filigree topped with a fleur de lis motif. The matching pearl studded fleur de lis decorative bail is also included, that may be removed when you choose to wear the star as a brooch.
Also included is a wonderful period "paperclip" style gold chain in 15K gold, as well as a pearl station 12K gold safety chain to use with the brooch for added security.
Measuring approximately 1 7/8 x 1 7/8 inches (38 x 38 mm), the Pearl & Diamond Star is quite dimensional and substantial, weighing 9.04 grams on my scale. I count 48 pearls, with the 6 largest surrounding the central diamond, and graduated pearls adorning each of the 6 rays of the star. Each fleur de lis detail is set with three additional pearls. In wonderful condition, the pearls, have a creamy color with blush pink to champagne tones. Estimated at .15 to .18 carats, the old mine cut diamond has a cushion shape and open culet, with lovely sparkle. (color judged to be H-I with eye-clean clarity of VS2 to SI1)
On the reverse is a curved pin and clasp, a watch hook so a watch or drop could be added when worn as a brooch - this also allows the piece to be worn as a pendant by sliding the original fleur de lis bail onto it. I suspect there was originally another option for the star - perhaps it could also be worn as a hair ornament, as there is a now empty screw fitting, as well. A hand engraved inscription remains: "J.W. & S.T. Mc. C. 6/6/05" so likely this was a special wedding or anniversary gift. A small maker's mark of "SS" and "18" also remain.
In matching 18K gold, the fleur de lis bail measures approximately 11/16 of an inch (18 mm) and is of a size to allow it to be used with many styles of chain; the safety chain tests as 12K gold, with three tiny seed pearl stations, and a partially legible mark on the pin, that in parts looks to read "MB & Co." so likely was added to the set at some point.
Lovely in its own right, the 15K gold (marked and tested) "paperclip" style chain could also be worn with other pendants or charms. It measures a hair under 16 3/4 inches long when closed using the original barrel style clasp. On my scale, it weighs 7.30 grams, so it also has a nice substantial feel to it. Together, all the gold elements weigh 18.53 grams on my scale.
Overall, the condition is very good, indeed. The only things of note are the hinge to the pin is very slightly loose, but it still operates well and could be adjusted if desired - and there is some expected wear to the fitted case, mostly to the exterior.
A very beautiful set with great versatility that has stayed together over many decades - ready to be worn and cherished for years to come.
