About the Item

This extraordinary new fob by Eytan Brandes features an exceptional but endearingly bumpy silver pearl set with four round sapphires. The 16.5mm pearl is from Tahiti, which we normally associate with gorgeous shades of green, purple and blue over black/gray body colors. Silver and white are rare hues for Tahitian pearls, so this pearl, with its enormous size, is truly something special. We purchased the pearl from George Hajjar of Seven Seas Pearls, with offices in Los Angeles and Tokyo. George only buys saltwater cultured pearls -- Akoyas from Japan, Tahitians from Tahiti, and South Sea pearls from Australia and Indonesia. He doesn't deal with any freshwater goods and only buys directly from the pearl farms, so we always know we're getting the real thing -- untreated and undyed. As you can see in the photos, the pearl is not round -- it's truly baroque. It's surface, especially the surfaces oriented toward the back, present an interesting landscape of wrinkles and bumps, but nothing gets in the way of the pearl's delicious luster, color and sheer size. All of the pearl's egregious flaws are hidden under the cap, where they belong, except for one discolored bump located right under the rim of the cap and oriented toward the back. (Refer to our goofy "fur" photo, next-to-last in the array.) Eytan set four 18K yellow gold bezels on the front-facing half of the pearl. These bezels are set with sapphires that Eytan pulled from a 1950s brooch; they're 2.2mm to 2.4mm, clean, dark and simply cut with a total weight of 0.18 carats. The cap is cast in 18 karat gold from a mold that Eytan made over 30 years ago for a customer who needed to replace one of her silver candle-snuffers! He came across this mold recently while digging around in the "mold drawer" (which, paradoxically, holds a lot of molds but isn't moldy) for something (that he never found, actually) and thought it would make a great cap for one of our huge pearls. The fixed triangular bale, also in 18 karat gold, has a fluted surface and is intentionally oversized. Eytan envisioned this large fob paired with heavier chains or cords and wanted to make sure the bale wouldn't get in the way. The gemstone chain, made from faceted 4mm dark blue sapphires and sparkly silver-blue labradorites, is included with the fob. It was made specifically for this fob but it's removable so you can mix and match.* It's 21.5" long and professionally strung on dark blue silk. The clasp is a choice little 18 karat toggle made by Eytan himself!
