About the Item

Two luscious and idiosyncratic baroque pearls hang from gorgeous links of 18 karat chain to make this one-of-a-kind pendant by Eytan Brandes. Both of the pearls are unusual and both are from our pearl dealer, George Hajjar of Seven Seas Pearls. Mr. Hajjar, with offices in Japan and downtown Los Angeles, only deals directly with pearl farms, and he only deals in Akoya, South Sea and Tahitian peals -- no freshwater, and no Chinese saltwater. The black pearl is basically round but for a nice little bump that Eytan used as his top drilling point. In addition to the bump, the surface of this pearl is amazing: naturally occurring bullseye patterns grace the pearl's front and back like little dartboards. As if those aren't enough, two pronounced ridges encircle the pearl just above and below its equator. The white pearl, with strong pink and silver undertones, might be mistaken for a South Sea (i.e., Australian) pearl due to its color, but it's actually Tahitian, making it a relatively rare find, but the shape is what got us: that duncecap top is so endearingly odd we couldn't say no! The chain is a gorgeous 1950's Italian reproduction of a Victorian watch chain, with thick oval links (patterned with ridges -- hard to see in the photos) joined with smaller polished links that have been "folded" at the ends to make little x's between each oval -- truly exceptional workmanship. Eytan finished the pendant by joining the two chain segments with a pair of top loops, nice and roomy to accommodate even the gnarliest chain hardware. We tried a lot of different chain options, but for this pendant, we like a thick, simple and solid black line best. The black rubber cord shown in the photos was our favorite and it's included.
