About the Item

Snakes upstairs and snakes downstairs, with a big, beautiful Tahitian pearl in the middle: this one-of-a-kind pendant from Eytan Brandes celebrates all things slithery. Snake North is one of Eytan's original designs, usually seen as earrings, but this wee snake is acting as the link between the pendant's bale and the pearl cap. He's crowned with a faceted emerald (recycled from an old brooch) and he's 18 karat gold. Snake South is actually the head of an antique hatpin -- tightly coiled and keeping a close eye on things. He's 10K yellow gold, but with the brassy or rosy tone of older gold. The pearl is a magnificent baroque black Tahitian pearl with strong green and aubergine overtones. It's from our pearl dealer, Seven Seas, with offices in Tokyo and downtown Los Angeles. Seven Seas deals only with saltwater pearls (Akoya, South Sea and Tahitian), and buys directly from the pearl farmer, so we always know we're getting the real thing. This pearl has pronounced ridges (circles), plus a few small pits (the pits are, happily, all located in the ridges), but the skin is otherwise smooth and lustrous as can be. For the removable chain, we used zoisite, which is a green stone with moody black inclusions -- perfect for a black pearl with green overtones. The other fittings are recycled or shop-made: The bayonet clasp is 14K recycled stock; the pendant's simple top loop is hand-pulled wire of recycled 18 karat gold; the little openwork pearl cap is an 18 karat bead cap recycled from a fussy old bracelet.
