2.4 Carat Diamond Whirlpool Platinum Cocktail Ring with Blue Zircon, circa 1960

About the Item

These kinds of cocktail rings were as common as cigarettes, girdles and, well, cocktails in the 1950's and 1960's. Most were 14 karat department store rings with commercial quality diamonds and indifferent workmanship, with an emphasis more on quantity than quality. But the use of so many diamonds and the complicated structure of prong baskets needed for these rings could also be a showcase for fine craftsmanship and result in some very wearable, very timeless pieces. Our ring definitely falls into this second category. Constructed of platinum, this ring is almost definitely American and was probably produced in the late 1950's or 1960's. It's a traditional cocktail ring, but it's beautifully made and features high-quality diamonds, so it's festive, showy, fun to wear, and the perfect nod to mid-Century fashion (that doesn't involve a girdle!) A line of round stones extends from each shoulder to curl over and under the center stone. Over these lines of round stones are lines of marquises, which lean in as they arch over the top and bottom of the centerpoint, then fall forward when they get to the other side. This is a great detail and it gives the ring a spiky asymmetrical windswept look. Both the marquises and the rounds are minutely graduated, becoming bigger as they approach the center then smaller again. These diamonds are extremely clean marquise and full cuts, probably G-H color and definitely VS clarity. The estimated diamond weight for all 36 stones is 2.4 carats. Needless to say, all stones are natural, earth-mined and untreated. The center stone was probably a diamond, but we thought a jolt of frosty color would give the ring a more contemporary look so we opted for a 1.7 carat natural blue Cambodian zircon. Beautifully finished on the inside to allow maximum light for each stone. Measurements: Face height: 3/4" Face width: 7/8" Band width: 1.8mm Band thickness: 0.9mm Face elevation: 11mm Marks: The band is marked "10% IRID PLAT," which until recently was a common American platinum designation, meaning 90% platinum and 10% iridium. Weights: Ring weight: Estimated diamond weight: 2.43 carats Zircon weight: 1.75 carats Sizing: On the mandrel, this ring is a size 5.5, but it fits a bit larger -- more like a 5.75. Resizing is complimentary for full-price buyers and negotiable otherwise.
