Antique Georgian 18K Gold & Silver Diamond & Blue Glass Scorpio Firmament Ring

About the Item

A Georgian diamond, Bristol blue glass, silver and rosy yellow gold ring, comprising forty-four rose cut diamonds, and a panel of Bristol blue glass, set in silver, to an 18 karat rosy yellow gold band. This beguiling Georgian ring centres around a panel of Bristol blue glass, of a luxurious cobalt blue. The Bristol blue glass panel is adorned with a rose cut diamond set motif, in shining silver, which represents the zodiac constellation ‘scorpius’ or ‘scorpio’. The central oval panel is further surrounded by a halo of rose cut diamonds, set in silver. The broad shoulders of the ring lead to a plain, polished band of warm, rosy toned yellow gold. The ring is in excellent condition. Wear and tear acquiescent with age. Ring such as these are known as ‘bagues au firmament’ which translates to mean ‘ring of the heavens’ and were a romantic envisionment of the night sky. Usually beginning with a background of inky blue glass or enamel to represent the night sky, adorned with glittering diamonds, set in silver, to represent the stars. After a great deal of research, I have found that the diamond set motif at the centre of this ring is representative of the constellation scorpio (I just couldn’t accept it was the flower it had been suggested as, as it just didn’t look like any flower I know!). At the time the ring was made (during the Age of Enlightenment) there was a fascination with all things celestial, with the significant discoveries of Galileo now carrying huge weight within society. Interest in astrology soared, and rings such as these were the ‘de rigueur’ for any Regency ball, not only to display that you were learned in the art of the universe but had a taste for the height of Paris fashion. These rings were popularised by Marie Antoinette. A very unusual and rare piece of jewellery. The head of the ring measures 21.3mm long, and 14.7mm wide, sitting 6.5mm off the hand. The band measures 3mm wide at the back. Total diamond weight, estimated: 0.21ctw Gross weight: 5.9g Ring size: due to the width of the band, this ring fits like a UK – M.5 US – 6.5 EU – 53 mm (actual size UK – R.5 US – 9 EU – 59.25 mm) Hallmarks: dolphin within a triangle stamped to outside of the band (Dutch mark known to be mistakenly used on old and foreign objects), circa 1825 and likely French in origin, tests as 18 karat gold

Elegant, timeless, feminine and wearable, the ring is a great addition to your jewelry collection. About Antique Rings: The artistry of making antique rings reflects the era’s cultural influences. Most antique rings were created by skilled artisans who meticulously handcrafted each piece. This level of craftsmanship allowed for intricate designs that were often time-consuming to produce. This includes filigree work, hand-chasing, granulation (tiny metal bead-work), and hand-piercing to create delicate openwork patterns. The emphasis on hand-made production is a hallmark of the era’s jewels. Antique rings were typically made from both gold and silver. The jewelers noticed that diamonds look whiter when set in white metal and not in yellow. The white gold was not invented back then yet and platinum was too hard for jewelry tools...
