About the Item

An enormous (26 mm x 18.62 mm x 10.30 mm) 42-carat lavender jadeite jade cabochon certified by Stone Group Labs to be 100% natural and untreated in any way is the thrilling centerpiece of this hand-fabricated heavy platinum ring. Even non-jewelry people ask about this ring when I wear it. Lavender jade is not a stone you see every day. Or ever. After "imperial jade," lavender jade is widely considered the most coveted. For the majority of my gemological life, I have been especially fascinated by and in awe of jade, primarily the green jadeite variety but over the last ten years, my appreciation for the vast expanse of varieties has increased exponentially. Lavender jade is unlike anything else on the planet. Even imperial jade can be mistaken for a Columbian emerald, and the ruby in the Queen's crown turned out to be a spinel and not a ruby at all. There are only a handful of gems that are without a spitting-image. This huge cabochon is evenly-toned and opaque but highly translucent so it always glows. What changes is the intensity of the color that radiates from the stone. It's violet in the morning or in the early evening when the air is blue; it brightens considerably indoors under artificial lighting to become lavender and if you place the ring on a windowsill in the late afternoon, it will display its deepest tone of purple. The platinum mounting is impressive. Platinum is a very strong metal so it's often used in fine, delicate designs as you see in Edwardian diamond engagement rings. But this is a very thick platinum setting and jade is a dense, heavy stone. Although its form might not be what is considered a *typical* man's ring, its density, substance and weight (22.15 grams) surpasses many traditional men's rings. Currently a size 8 ¼, this ring could be resized by your local jeweler. Hallmarked inside the band with PT900 for platinum and "42.97" (for the carat weight of the stone and, I believe, the date of fabrication —1997).
