Stephen Webster
Iconic British jeweler Stephen Webster MBE shook everything up when he introduced his Crystal Haze rings in 1995.
The jewelry landscape was almost barren during the 1990s. Fashion dictated minimalism, and stars treading the red carpet wore Armani gowns in earth tones with very few sparkling accessories. Elsa Peretti’s little diamond solitaire necklace for Tiffany & Co. was in vogue. And the gold Cartier Panthère watch was the only item many female stars wore.
The seismic shift was sparked in 2000 when Madonna attended a party for the premiere of her movie The Next Best Thing wearing the Crystal Haze ring. She had purchased it directly from Webster, to whom she’d been introduced by a friend. Pictures of the star singer’s outing popped up seemingly everywhere — on her index finger, Webster’s Crystal Haze ring was so much bigger and bolder than the styles most celebrities were wearing at the time. The press coverage snowballed in the months and years to come as other celebrities, including Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera and Pink, were spotted in the now-immediately recognizable jewel.
This massive success came to Webster when he was in his 30s, not long after he launched his label, in 1989, but the design was the culmination of a lifetime of experience. At the tender age of 16, Webster found his calling when he toured Medway College of Design in Rochester, England, with a career counselor. He was immediately attracted to the jewelry department, which was “noisy, slightly grubby and lit with orangey, naked flames.” After graduating, he worked for a few years as a bench jeweler in London and the resort town of Banff, in Alberta, Canada, finally settling in Santa Barbara, California.
The luxurious, laid-back style of the city, nicknamed the American Riviera, opened Webster’s eyes to the possibility of a kind of jewelry different from the traditional designs that defined the field in England. He began working with semiprecious stones, an integral element of the Crystal Haze line. The Santa Barbara community embraced the colors and was open to lesser-known gems in fine jewelry, such as apple-green chrysoprase, lavender chalcedony and Peruvian pink opal.
The idea for the Crystal Haze ring came to Webster when he was having lapidaries in Idar-Oberstein, Germany, cut rock crystal into special shapes for big brooches. He wanted to create statement jewels in which two gems cut into a narrow arc would curve over the finger in a gold ring. The contour and connecting of the stones required a couple of years of development, some innovative thinking and plenty of expertise.
Today, Webster’s stores dot the globe, and he has a long list of illustrious collectors. The many lines he has produced over the years — from Vertigo and Dynamite to Fly By Night and Jewels Verne — display the same qualities that characterize Crystal Haze: bold, edgy designs, beautifully manufactured.

- The ReBelles Double Dutch Cocktail RingBy Stephen WebsterLocated in London, GB‘The ReBelles’, takes inspiration from heroines throughout history, celebrating their achievements, intellects, and courage. Comprising of seven limited-edition made-to order cocktail rings, each piece showcases Stephen Webster’s impeccable craftsmanship and attention to detail and is bursting with unique personality and charisma, referencing the heroine who inspired it. Inspired by Mata Hari, the rumoured double agent working for both sides during the Great War. Set in 18ct Rose Gold with a central Peridot surrounded by Diamonds, with a jewelled snake set with Diamonds, Rubies and Pink Sapphires and gold tassels. Margaretha Zelle was born in Leeuwarden Holland in 1876 and had a somewhat tragic early life. Starting with her once-prosperous family losing everything after disastrous oil speculations and finishing with the divorce of her abusive husband and death of one of her children. Maragaretha turned to the study of Malaysian culture and dance whilst stationed in the Dutch East Indies. In an attempt to support herself, she worked as a circus performer, artist and model, before turning her hand to the latest art form emerging from the European nightlife scene, known as modern dance. Moving to Paris, Margaretha combined her traditional Malaysian dance with something even more exotic, she completed the seductive mystery by assuming the persona of Mata Hari, a Javanese princess of Hindu birth and full of eastern promise. Carefree and provocative, she was often photographed in nothing more than a bejewelled breastplate and a nude body stocking, which she later discarded. Penetrating the wealthiest and most influential circles, she inspired a myriad of impersonators. Her notorious sensuality and eroticism meant Mata was never short of suitors, high ranking officers, politicians and the idle rich across Europe. Her liaisons meant she regularly crossed borders, never feeling particularly aligned to any one nationality. As the Great War progressed, accusations started to fly that Mata Hari was, in fact, a double agent, used by both sides to spread covert material via the notoriously unreliable medium of ‘pillow talk’. Unable to defend her innocence and, to a certain extent, revelling in her notoriety, after intense interrogation by the French army, she was executed by firing squad in 1917. Since then, there has been a swell of opinion that Margaretha Zelle was forced by circumstance and the times to reinvent herself as an instinct to survive. More a victim than a traitor. The Double Dutch ReBelle, embodies Mata Hari’s exotic ways with a central Peridot and Diamond surround and a Diamond jewellery snake. Representing her sensual dance moves the mount is crafted with bejewelled hands in 18ct rose Gold, set with a Diamond jewellery snake, Rubies and pink Sapphires, and tassels hanging draws reference from her seductive costumes. Comprising of seven limited-edition made-to order cocktail rings, each piece showcases Stephen Webster’s impeccable craftsmanship and attention to detail and is bursting with unique personality and charisma, referencing the heroine who inspired it. Inspired by the activist Rachel Carson, a marine biologist who was the first to question the extensive use of synthetic pesticides and the damage they caused to the health of people and the environment. Set in 18ct White Gold, featuring a central carved Moonstone face with Grey and White Diamond spines. Rachel Carson spent most of her life below the water line. A marine biologist in the US bureau of fishers by trade, she was also a great writer and storyteller and eventually towelled down and turned her hand to become a full-time nature writer. Carson’s nonfiction Trilogy of The Seas became unlikely best sellers. Her last book published two years before she died really ruffled some feathers, Silent Spring, another non-fiction was very much about dry land. Carson questioned the extensive use of synthetic pesticides, the damage they caused to the health of people and the environment in general and this attention was not universally welcomed. There was a fierce backlash from the chemical companies and many questions asked of government bodies and individuals who had accepted the lobbying without question as to the obvious side effects. The book and reaction spurred a reversal of the national pesticide policy, the universal banning of DDT and a grassroots movement that led to the US environmental protection agency. Carson died before she could witness the massive impact she had started, however posthumously she was awarded the presidential medal of freedom by then President Carter...Category

- The ReBelles Red Sail Sunset Cocktail RingBy Stephen WebsterLocated in London, GB‘The ReBelles’, takes inspiration from heroines throughout history, celebrating their achievements, intellects, and courage. Comprising of seven limited-edition made-to order cocktail rings, each piece showcases Stephen Webster’s impeccable craftsmanship and attention to detail and is bursting with unique personality and charisma, referencing the heroine who inspired it. Taking inspiration from Ching Shih, a legendary pirate who commanded The Red Flag Fleet consisting of 1,800 ships and a vast crew of some 80,000 men. Set in 18ct Yellow Gold with a central Orange Citrine (shown in 17.57ct) and cabochon Ruby sails, White Diamonds and tattoo detailing using black plating. After a mega pirate of the seven seas Ching, died in 1807, his wife was the unlikely but more than capable successor. She was known from then on as Ching Shih, which translates to ‘Ching’s widow’. As she stepped comfortably into his pirate boots assuming the role of a pirate in chief, commanding The Red Flag Fleet of 1,800 ships and a vast crew of some 80,000 men. By comparison, the famous pirate Black Beard, plundering the seas around the same time and had a mere four ships and 300 men. The Red Flag Fleet was formidable, robbing towns, markets, and villages from Macau to Canton. Ching managed to implement some basic codes of conduct: rape as well as the failure to share the bounty according to the agreed 80/20 split was punishable by death, and the less serious offence of a mid-life career change rewarded by having one’s ears chopped off. The Qing dynasty, the Dutch and British Navy’s were no match for Ching Shih and her pirates of the Orient. In 1810 a truce was declared; widow Ching and the entire fleet were given amnesty. They got to keep the bounty and their freedom in exchange for hanging up their cutlasses, patches and parrots and lowering the Jolly Roger once and for all. Ching, not quite ready for a quiet life, opened a gambling house, where she made money at the mah-jong tables until her death at 69, a ripe old age for a pirate! The Red Sail Sunset...Category
