1930's Art Deco Diamond Target Halo Engagement Ring with Appraisals

About the Item

Offered is a charming and very fiery 1930's Art Deco diamond engagement ring with a wonderful Target, Halo, flower or "bull's eye" design. Two independent appraisals will accompany the ring to its new home - one is from June, 2005 and the other is from January of this year. (shown in the final two photos) Crafted of platinum (the head) and 18K white gold (the shank or band), the ring features a total of 17 chunky old European and old mine cut diamonds in a wonderful circular design, with diamond-set shoulders. The total estimated carat weight is approximately 1 to 1.15 carats, according to the appraisals; by my estimation the carat weight is approximately 1.10 carats. (the appraisals judge the diamond clarity to be in the VS to I and VS2 to SI2 range, with color to be G-J and H-J, respectively. The center diamond is nice and clean, while some of the smaller diamonds have imperfections seen with magnification. Three of the four diamonds at the shoulders have warmth to their color, while I see only one slightly warm diamond in the surround. ) The center old mine cut diamond is bezel-set, approximately .25 carats, with a wonderfully chunky old cut and all the fire and brilliance I love to see in antique diamonds. Eye-clean, it's also nice and clean under magnification with no damage. The bezel retains a bit of the original milgrain edging - but, much has smoothed away with time. It could be re-done/restored if desired. Twelve additional old cuts are set in the surround, varying a bit in size and cut, also very bright and fiery. I believe two may be old replacements as they are a bit small for their settings, though their cut is a good match and they are of the same period as the other stones in the ring. Under magnification I can see the bead settings show some expected wear, and some have been touched up in the past. Some original milgrain remains on the inner and curved outer edges, but most has smoothed away. (again, this can be restored, if desired) Each shoulder is set with two additional chunky old cut diamonds, that are set a bit more rustically, again, with only a bit of original milgrain remaining. Measuring approximatley 16 x 12.5 mm by my calculations, the face is an elegant size, with a lovely period presence. The rise off the finger at the highest point is approximately 4.95 mm. The band remains in good condition, with slight signs of having been sized in the past. A partial remaining mark of "plat" is inside. (the first appraisal notes that it originally was marked "18ct Plat.") Currently a size 5, the ring is sizable up or down within a few sizes. If it goes up in size I recommend adding white gold at the back (a partial shank) to keep it sturdy for regular wear. On my scale, the finished weight of the ring is 3.4 grams. I will try to post a video soon, as photos don't do this ring justice - it's very lovely in person.

Replacements made: I believe a couple of diamonds have been replaced (with similar old cuts) over the years as two of the stones are a little small for their settings. Repaired: The ring shows slight signs of having been sized in the past; the bead & collet settings and gallery have been touched up in the past. Wear consistent with age and use. Some of the original milgrain shows smoothing from time, but it could be redone, if desired.
