Edwardian - Art Deco Diamond Stick Pin with Old European & Rose Cut Diamonds
About the Item
Dating to the late Edwardian into the Art Deco period, this super sparkly, elegant stickpin or cravat pin is in wonderful condition and ready to wear, but would also be very lovely converted to a ring or charm pendant.
Crafted of 18K gold and platinum, the stickpin features a round open work latticework design set with old rose cut diamonds and centered with a bezel set old European cut diamond. Crisp milgrain edges the inner part of the border as well as edges the center diamond's bezel. These are especially white, lively and fiery diamonds, giving the pin a lavish look for its dainty size.
Measuring approximately 10.87 mm or 7/16 of an inch, the ornamental face of the stickpin contains a total of 75 tiny glittering rose cut diamonds: 33 grace the outer border of the circular design, and another 42 are set within the lattice work inside the border. Very white and sparkly, there is a bit of variation in their size as is usual with old rose cuts, but on average they measure approximately .72 mm. None are missing and all look to be original and in good condition. (Under magnification I see one stone that could be chipped, but I think that was how it was cut originally.)
The bezel set center diamond measures approximately 2.2 mm in diameter and is estimated to weigh approximately .05 carats. Also very bright and fiery, I see a few tiny inclusions under magnification, while it is clean to the naked eye. In lovely original condition, I see no nicks, chips or scratches.
Despite its delicate looking design, the pin is sturdily made, with a well attached pin stem that measures approximately 2 1/2 inches long, giving the entire piece a total length of just over 2 3/4 inches. There are some tiny hallmarks on the side of the pin stem that I cannot make out, but would assume them to be European in origin. My testing is showing 18K for the pin stem and platinum for the ornamental top, however the pin stem may be rhodium over gold. I didn't want to do a deep scratch affecting the nice surface. On my scale, the pin weighs 2.44 grams.
