Art Deco Rose Cut Diamond Skeleton Key Jabot Pin in Platinum & 18K Gold

About the Item

Elegant, dainty and sparkly – this elegant key jabot pin dates to the late Edwardian to Art Deco period. Crafted of platinum and 18K gold, the piece features a figural skeleton key design in the form of a small jabot pin, allowing the top of the key to be removed so the pin can be put through clothing, a scarf, etc., or even from which to dangle a charm or two. Tiny rose cut diamonds sparkle and crisp milgrain edges the design. It would also be beautiful added to a chain to convert to a necklace, or a key themed ring. Most jabot pins I come across are rather large - I really like the petite size of this one, it's darling and much easier to style/wear. With the two parts attached, the total length is just under 1 1/2 inches or 37.8 mm. At its widest - the diamond-set oval part of the skeleton key design, it is a little over 1/4 of an inch or 7 mm. There are 19 old rose cut diamonds in the top section, and another 9 in the lower section, including the bottom one which is set in a tiny milgrain edged bezel. Varying in size depending upon where in the design they are placed, they range from approximately 1.4 to .05 mm. Some are more rustic than others and all appear to be original. They are nice and sparkly, which I couldn't capture in my photos, so it is actually much prettier and more charming than my photos would suggest. I see a few diamonds with wear that are chipped, seen with magnification. The smallest stone that is chipped also has a tiny crack. Otherwise, the piece is in good antique condition with light wear. On my scale, the weight is 1.93 grams. The mechanism operates simply - there is a tiny groove in the pin stem which allows you to push the gold piece on the back into the groove. It lifts up slightly so you can pull the pin out. It's best to push a bit hard on the gold piece for security. I wanted to offer it in original form as well, but I think it would be a wonderful conversion necklace with either a slender platinum or gold chain...clasping in the front, using the jabot pin. Small charms could dangle from the pin stem. Or permanently soldering the key shut while removing the pin stem would also be lovely. My ideas for a ring are to use the two diamond-set parts of the skeleton key and have them offset, or to place them together for a more classic look. Lots of options. Please feel free to message me to discuss ideas and costs if you are interested in customizing a conversion.
