Antique Old Mine Cut Diamond & Emerald Ring in 18K Gold

About the Item

Far more beautiful than I can capture in my photos, this striking Victorian three stone ring features a rich, glowing "gemmy" natural emerald, between two extremely fiery, chunky old mine cut diamonds. The shoulders are beautifully detailed, as well, for even more period elegance. The total estimated gem weight in the ring is approximately 1.77 carats, or so. Far more striking than the more commonly seen horizontal three stone rings, this ring has a marvelous vertical design. It's both eye catching and provides a lot of finger coverage. The gold is testing as 18K yellow gold, with platinum on the prongs. Each of the old mine cut diamonds is wonderfully chunky with a cushiony cut, open culet and all the brilliance & fire one wants to see in antique diamonds. It's a bit challenging to measure their depth while set, but I estimate one diamond to weigh approximately .65 carats and one to weigh approximately .62 carats. Both are very lively, eye-clean and have good clarity under magnification that I would judge to be SI. (I don't see internal inclusions in one diamond, but it has a small chip at the girdle seen with magnification; the other has a couple of clear inclusions under magnification - since both diamonds were hand cut their girdles - outer edge - show a little expected roughness with magnification. This is common with antique diamonds) Their color is near-colorless to faint color, so there is a hint of warmth that is very pleasing. Their prongs look to have been re-tipped and topped with platinum in the past, so they remain in good condition. The centrally set natural emerald has beautiful vivid color, natural inclusions and a lovely glow. I estimate it at approximatley .50 a carat. Remaining in overall very good condition, I see a little wear under magnification. (mostly at the facet junctions) I can see a couple of natural inclusions with my naked eye, but the emerald's color is so beautiful that I find them to simply add character to the gem. The prongs are in great shape and also appear to have been redone. With a splendid presence on the hand, the face measures approximately 16 x 15.8 mm, including the upper shoulders. The rise off the finger is approximately 7 mm at the highest point, but is slightly lower in the center at the emerald's table, which is approximately 6.5 mm. A scrolling design with milgrain like edging decorates each shoulder, and since the gems are set vertically one really gets to see and enjoy the design. (one shoulder has an old stable repair) Measuring approximately 6.72 mm at the shoulder, the band tapers gradually to approximately 1.99 mm at the very back. The band remains in good condition, with no hallmarks but with a worn stamped number of "1692" inside. On my scale, the finished weight is 4.60 grams. Currently a size 6.5, the ring may be sized up or down within reason by a good jeweler. I would expect to add more gold at the back of the band if you wish to size it up more than slightly, so as to keep it sturdy. It's a gorgeous ring, ready to enjoy.
