About the Item
If you are looking for a classic antique signet ring then this one is for you.
A simple yet handsome design, this signet ring has an oval shaped face set with a carved Bloodstone intaglio.
It has a smooth polished band and beautiful chunky plain shoulders allowing the Bloodstone to take centre stage.
It has been carefully carved to depict a lion rampant with a diamond shape and the latin inscription Nil Despersandum, translating to Never Despair or Do not despair, this was used in a number of heraldic coat of arms.
A wonderful mid-Victorian piece, well carved, these pieces are highly sought after by collectors and are increasingly hard to find in good condition.

Elaborately carved gems were a staple of luxury in antiquity and often incised onto semi-precious stones such as carnelian or jasper. In the form of a talisman they served as extraordinary symbols of status and in certain cases, they were believed to provide divine protection. They were also employed as a form of personal identification when pressed in hot wax or clay. Rulers, nobles and wealthy merchants sought, collected and traded these fascinating miniature works of art.
