This rare silver ring dates from the 1600's and likely originates from Western Europe. The ring is cast in one piece, the intaglio is framed within a chased octagonal border and the band displays flared and chamfered edges at the shoulders, all features typical of the period. The Pelican in Her Piety Medieval signet ring features strong cross cultural references with the engraving of the pelican and the navigation symbols of the moon and stars. Sixteenth and seventeenth century portraits show signet rings worn on the forefinger or thumb, to more easily press the ring to the wax with a simple turn of the hand. Albeit their practical function, with the use of precious metals they were also signs of status. The Pelican in her piety refers to the medieval fable of the pelican drawing blood from her breast to feed her chicks.
