Men's Demantoid Garnet Ring over 2 Carat in Gold, circa 1990s

About the Item

Demantoid garnets are the rarest species of garnet and the most valuable. They were first discovered in the Ural mountains of Russia in the early nineteenth century and were typically found in very small sizes. There are two main reasons for their high value: their lush green color and their incredible fire, which can surpass even that of a diamond. They became all the rage during the Belle Époque period (the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries) and were a favorite of Russian monarchs. Then in the 1990s, new deposits of this gem were discovered in Namibia and Madagascar. This ring features a nearly 3 carat—2.80, not counting what's under the bezel—bright green, oval-cut demantoid with incredible fire. Demantoids can have a rather flat, off-key green coloring, or they are frequently very dark. But this gem is a bright, almost emerald-green that flashes blue, red, orange, purple, yellow. It's quite impressive. Though it contains no "horsetail" inclusion (those are found only in demantoids from Russia), it does have minor inclusions to make things interesting. On either side are four very white and tiny diamonds that total just under 1/4 carat and add two crisp lines of sparkle. The 18k yellow gold setting was handmade and looks similar to jewelry from this period that was made in Thailand, so that's a likely origin for this piece. It's currently a size 10 and could be resized by your local jeweler, preferably with a laser welder. The stone has very minor wear to one of the facets and a couple of the inclusions do reach the surface but all of this is rendered void by the stone's electrifying color and eye-clean presentation. It weighs 9 grams, which makes it a very comfortable ring to wear considering its large size. This impressive circa 1990s ring is something special: a collector's gem in a size rarely encountered. There's not one reason a woman couldn't have this ring sized to fit her finger, and it would also make a great, unique male engagement ring.
