About the Item

This sterling silver ladle was made in London by silversmiths Thomas & William Chawner. The crisp hallmarks on the piece date its manufacture to 1767, very early in the reign of George III. The piece features a period crest to the handle depicting what appears to be a pomegranate and a monogram 'CEV', likely the initials of the original owner. The ladle would have likely been designed to serve soup but could be equally as useful for serving punch. There appears to be a very old repair to a narrow part of the handle, which has been executed very well and is not noticeable unless closely inspected. The rim of the bowl has been finished with a ruffled edge and the outside of the piece's handle has a gadroon type finish. Marked - London hallmarks for 1767 & Thomas & William Chawner maker's mark Measures - 35cm L Total weight of piece - 170 grams
