Antique Edwardian 1903 14k Gold Filled Pocket Watch
Located in London, GB
Antique pocket watch featuring a beautiful ornate design dating back to 1903. The watch has a number of makings indicating the piece was made by 'Waltham Watch Company' and it is 14k gold filled. The interior watch mechanism dates back to 1891 and went into manufacture in 1903. The watch company was estimated in 1850 and closed in 1957. They produced the watches in Waltham, Massachusetts in the United States. Waltham was one of the great American manufactures. The watch is tactile to touch with textured engravings on the back and the front has a new plastic face which is in excellent condition. The watch keeps time beautifully. To operate the watch, carefully twist the top faceted gold ball situated inside the ring at the top of the piece. By twisting the ball the piece is being wound up, this watch does not need a key. To set the time you gentle pull the top ball until you hear a click, and turn to set the time. Please watch the video provided. This piece is very decorative, it would work very well on a pocket watch chain for a wedding or as a statement necklace. ERA Edwardian, 1901-1910 HALLMARKS American Waltham Watch Co Guaranteed, J. Johann Heinrich Moser, born in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, hailed from a family of watchmakers. He honed his craft in Le Locle before relocating to Russia in the 1820s. Setting up a watch workshop in St. Petersburg in 1826, he adopted the anglicized name 'Henry Moser.' By 1828, Moser had established a trade office in St. Petersburg, expanding to Moscow in 1831. He even secured a residence permit for Nizhny Novgorod. Through the Nizhny Novgorod fair, Moser's watches found their way from Russia to India and China. Components were sourced from Le Locle and assembled in St. Petersburg. Some watch cases and dials were crafted in Moscow, evident from inscriptions like "H. MOSER IN MOSCOW." Moser's factory produced a diverse range of pocket watches for men...

Patek Philippe 18 Kt Yellow Gold Ultra Thin Pocket Watch, Worlds Thinnest Watch
Located in Long Beach, CA
FACTORY / HOUSE: Patek Philippe & Co. for Gubelin STYLE / REFERENCE: Ultra Thin Pocket Watch METAL / MATERIAL: 18Kt. Yellow Gold CIRCA / YEAR: 1920 DIMENSIONS / SIZE: 43mm Diameter MOVEMENT / CALIBER: Manual Winding / 17 Jewels / Caliber Ultra Thin DIAL / HANDS: Original Silvered by Stern Freres Silvered with Kiln Fired Enamel Printing / Blued Steel Hands WARRANTY: 18 months on the movement LIFETIME SERVICE COMMITMENT This is, The Worlds Thinnest Watch. Patek Philippe produced this watch in 1920. They achieved the ultimate in watch making history by setting the Roller Jewel into the Balance Wheel Arms. This had never been done before. Not even Cartier produced a thinner watch than this one. Additionally, this watch has the ultimate in dials as well. The dial was produced for Patek Philippe by Stern Freres. Stern was renowned in Switzerland, as well as world wide as the finest dial house of all time. In fact Stern, in the early 1930's, purchased the bankrupt house of Patek Philippe and they still own Patek today. The dial is done in Sterling Silver and the printing is engraved out and filled with enamel, fired in a furnace at 1500 degrees Fahrenheit, polished, fired again and finally polished for the last time. This work is no longer done as it was to expensive and time consuming. The hands are also of the finest workmanship and these are the original hands and done in Blued Steel. This is done by heating the steel up to 640 degrees Fahrenheit and quickly quenching the hands. Lastly, you may be able to see that the case work on this watch features a remarkable detail. It has what is called the "hidden hinge." When the case is closed you cannot see the hinge. Only the worlds finest jewelers know how to make the "hidden hinge." This watch comes with what appears to be the original period 18Kt. and enamel inlayed chain. The chain is entirely hand constructed. This is the finest example of a Patek Philippe Pocket Watch...

Longines for Birks Open Faced Pocket Watch with Original Dial, circa 1921
Located in Long Beach, CA
FACTORY / HOUSE: Longines for Birks of Canada STYLE / REFERENCE: Art Deco Open Faced Pocket Watch METAL / MATERIAL: Yellow Gold Filled CIRCA / YEAR: 1921 DIMENSIONS / SIZE: Diameter 45mm MOVEMENT / CALIBER: Manual Winding / 15 Jewels / Caliber 18.89 DIAL / HANDS: Original Gilt Dial with Kiln Fired Enamel Printing by Stern Freres / Blued Steel Hands WARRANTY: 18 months on the movement LIFETIME SERVICE COMMITMENT Henry Birks and Sons is the most famous house in Canada, the Cartier of Canada. This unique watch was produced for Birks by Longines. Impressively, the dial was produced for Longines, for this watch by the house of Stern Freres. The Stern family were the most renowned dial house in Switzerland. They were so successful that in the early 1930's, after falling into bankruptcy they purchased the Patek Philippe Watch Company. Stern still owns Patek Philippe to this day. The dial on this watch is in flawless original condition. Longines was founded in 1832 by Auguste Agassiz, a Swiss watchmaker. He was also the brother of renowned biologist Louis Agassiz. Agassiz started the company with two partners, lawyers Henri Raiguel and Florian Morel. The company's original name was Raiguel Jeune & Cie. In 1846, Raigeul and Morel retired from the watch industry, leaving Agassiz as sole company head. Several years later, Agassiz brought in his bright, enterprising nephew, trained economist Ernest Francillon, into the business. Francillon was the mastermind behind several impressive innovations that would distinguish the company from its competitors. In 1880, Francillon trademarked the Longines name and its winged hourglass logo. The winged hourglass is a symbol of precision and timekeeping, and it has become one of the most recognizable logos in the watch industry. In 1912, Longines became the official timekeeper of the Olympic Games. The company has held this position ever since, and it has been involved in every Olympic Games since then. Longines has also been the official timekeeper of many other major sporting events, including the World Championships in Athletics, the Formula One World Championship, and the America's Cup. In 1931, Longines invented the Lindbergh Hour Angle watch. This watch was designed specifically for Charles Lindbergh, the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. The watch featured a special bezel that allowed Lindbergh to calculate his longitude. In my own personal collection, I have the Longines Caliber 13 ZN Chronograph that Commander Richard Byrd took to Antarctica in 1928. It was purchased at the time from Abercrombie and Fitch in New York along with all the other equipment used on the expedition, it still runs well and keeps good, even after 100 years. In the 1980’s I was privileged to view their “collection” in their vaults. It was not open to the public, but a contact arranged it. There were examples of all the finest pocket and wristwatches they had ever produced. This included all the pieces that had received navigational and chronometer ratings. They were not even arranged for presentation; they were merely in drawers. I was shown the collection by their renowned “springer.” I have forgotten his name, but he was responsible for adjusting the watches to win the chronometer ratings. He was probably 80 years old at the time. Interestingly but not surprisingly he could only speak to me about adjusting the hairspring but not about the watch in general. This is something that is not uncommon in the watch world. A craftsman will only know about the part of the watch that they are responsible for. When I produced my own watch in Geneva many years ago, I realized that the dial maker and case maker and other associated craftsmen knew almost nothing about what each other did. This seemed odd to me, but it is that way. Lastly, our family jewelry store in Los Angeles was an official Longines retailer so I can speak from personal experience that Longines is an exceptional watch company regarding their service and dependability. They are also famous for the “Ultra Chron...

Yellows Gold CIRCA / YEAR: 1900's DIMENSIONS / SIZE: Diameter 35mm MOVEMENT / CALIBER: Manual Winding / 17 Jewels DIAL / HANDS: Kiln Fired Enamel Dial with Filigree Hands WARRANTY: 18 months on the movement LIFETIME SERVICE COMMITMENT This is a "vault find" watch, it has been locked up for nearly 50 years, which means it needs a service. We will service it for you as part of the purchase price before it is shipped out to you. This will delay shipping for a few days of course. It is rare that we find watches with their original box and papers that are this old. This unique pendant was presented as an award for shooting contest. The watch comes with original documentation as well discussing the event which was a woman's shooting contest. The watch is in excellent original condition and can actually be worn and counted on all the time. This is a truly unique item. The company was founded in 1832 by Auguste Agassiz, a Swiss watchmaker. Longines Silver & Niello Watch from 1915 Dial by Stern Freres Matching Chain

The case is done in Sterling Silver and engraved and filled with Niello. Niello is an ancient process no longer done today, The dial is done in Sterling Silver with Kiln Fired Enamel Print by Stern Freres. Stern was house that bought Patek Philippe when it went bankrupt in the 1930s. Stern Still owns Patek Philippe today. You will likely never see another example of this watch again. We have just serviced it and it keeps dependable time as well. The company was founded in 1832 by Auguste Agassiz, a Swiss watchmaker.

Antique and Vintage Pocket Watches for Sale on 1stDibs

Can you pull off a vintage pocket watch? Of course you can. With a suit and a waistcoat, a pocket watch can be a refreshing alternative to a wristwatch.

The earliest pocket watches were luxury items, and, owing to cost, they weren’t commonplace until the 19th century. Artfully crafted pocket watches were a symbol of wealth, and manufacturers such as Vacheron Constantin and Patek Philippe became known for theirs. (Today, they’re among the most sought after by collectors and enthusiasts.)

At the onset, pocket watches resembled small round table clocks, and pulling your small round table clock — perhaps of the silver variety — out of your breast pocket in front of someone else demonstrated unequivocally that you cared about punctuality. For collectors, pocket watches are big, and that means a larger canvas provided for functions without crowding the dial. For example, the Marius Lecoultre pocket watch — made circa 1890 — does everything but uncork your wine.

In the late 1800s, the open-face pocket watch became a staple on the American railroad. It was a requirement for railway workers to wear a pocket watch, as the timepieces were responsible for keeping conductors on schedule. This was a boon to the watchmaking industry, with companies like Hamilton, the Elgin National Watch Company and the Waltham Watch Company producing high-grade and workingman’s watches.

By the 1930s, wristwatches comprised the bulk of watch manufacturing in America, superseding the pocket watch. Suddenly, if you wanted to know the time, you merely glanced at your wrist. But given their vintage charm and our general appetite for good design, pocket watches are a piece of statement-making jewelry and today can prove complementary to your formal attire in a manner that is stylish and unconventional.

Let time take its course — browse a vast selection of antique and vintage pocket watches available on 1stDibs designed by legendary brands such as IWC, Cartier and more.
