Cool turquoise, blues, and greens are streaked with pearlescent accents that play across this beautiful abstract original work "Flash Memory 'B'" by master print maker Linda Whittemore. This mixed media viscosity monotype displays all of the unique skill and painterly touch of the artist, who draws her inspiration from the natural beauty that surrounds her on her home of Maui. Linda works in a printmaking style called viscosity monotype, although she is trained in the traditional form of Intaglio printmaking. Her works are a story of color and mood, She continues to paint scenes around the island of Maui and further abstracts them in her studio using the printmaking process. Often, watercolor plein aire paintings are a prelude to her original monotypes. “It’s all a process, one medium leads to the next. We create from what we know or don’t know. My paintings are who I am.” Linda also has enjoyed painting the figure for many years. Linda began a life long relationship with watercolor painting at the age of eight. She studied two full years with the past president of the Watercolor Society, Roger Armstrong, as well as other teachers like Chris Sullivan, Hiroke Morinue, Richard Nelson, Roger Folk George Allen and John Cosby. Chris Nugent was a student of Phil Dike, Millard Sheets and Rex Brandt. Sullivan was also a student of Diebenkorn, so Linda was able to gain a very contemporary understanding of painting. "Grusgrav", a wonderfully minimal yet expressive mid century modern abstract limited edition hand signed lithograph by Frede Christoffersen (Danish, 1919-1987). This 1962 color-field abstract features a subdued palette of earthy golden rod yellows and sage, the geometric areas of color divided into fractured shapes with organic and expressive texture. Grusgrav, the title of the piece, is Danish for gravel pit. Titled "Grusgrav", signed with the artist's initials "FC" and dated "62" lower right. Numbered "36/80" lower left. It is in very good, never-framed condition with no flaws to note. Jean Marie Haessle was born in Buhl, Haut-Rhin, France. After living for a few years in Paris, he moved to New York City in 1967 where he still works and lives in his studio on Spring Street in Soho. Over the years, he had numerous shows in the US, New York, Miami, Texas and California, France and Italy (see the resume). In the mid-80’s he worked for a period in France (Paris, Lyon, and Cannes). In the late 90’s he worked in Mexico (San Miguel de Allende) where he had a one person show in 1997 in the Museo de Art in Queretaro. He had a survey exhibition of the last 30 years of his work at the Korean University Museum, Seoul, Korea in spring 2014 and a major one person show in the Namu Modern &Contemporary gallery in Seoul in September of the same year. In September 2016 he had a sold out show at the Wada Garou gallery in Tokyo, Japan. In recent years, he had numerous shows in Korea, Seoul and Busan as well as in Japan, Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. This one: 19/50 This exceptional color lithograph is an excellent example of Stanley William Hayter’s iconic printmaking. He is the founder of Atelier 17, and as such, one of the most influential printmakers of the 20th century. Volubilis was published in 1969, and is B&M 331 in the catalog raisonne. The print is in good condition aside from soft handling creases, stray printing ink in the lower right corner, 6 in. surface rub upper left corner which is barely visible upon very close inspection.
