A rare circular football trade card in the shape of a leather football ball. Made by the toy shop owner from Bradford, John Baines. Baines went on to produce not only football cards but eventually covered scores of different sports, from golf, cricket, tennis to horse racing and bowls, and just about any kind of sporting affiliations in just about every city, town and village in the UK. The cards were promoted in various prize competitions like finding certain "medal cards", collection a certain amount of empty packets. One could always submit a mini essay on sport with the winner having their writing printed on the backs of the cards. Hence why the backs are so varied and different.
The baines card offered for sale is printed in a yellow tone with a picture of a young boy playing football, 'The Village Champion', to the front with the words 'Well Centred, Rochdale'. A self-portrait of the great artist, depicting him lost in thought before one of his paintings, which is apparently related to his home country Russia, as suggested by the small figure in the lower right of the work. Chagall’s wife Valentina (“Vava”), who was also from Russia, is looking over his shoulder, full of longing.
The small surreal elements that are characteristic of Chagall’s paintings are also present here: the silhouettes of the houses that seems to stick out of the painting and a figure with a flute or trombone standing on its head.

The working life of Julian Trevelyan (1910-88) spanned more than 65 years. He joined Stanley Hayter's atelier in Paris in 1931 where he worked alongside artists such as Ernst, Kokoschka, Masson, Miro and Picasso. It was in this atmosphere that he turned to Surrealism and became a founding member of the British Surrealist Group.
