1896 poster by Privat-Livemont Absinthe Robette Les Maîtres de l'Affiche
By Georges Henri Privat-Livemont
Located in PARIS, FR
The 1896 original poster by Privat-Livemont for Absinthe Robette stands as one of the most iconic examples of the Art Nouveau movement and a testament to the golden age of advertising art. Included in the prestigious series Les Maîtres de l'Affiche as Plate 104, this poster epitomizes the elegance, fluidity, and ornamental style that defined turn-of-the-century commercial design. Designed by Privat-Livemont, a Belgian artist renowned for his contributions to Art Nouveau, the Absinthe Robette poster was created to advertise the popular absinthe drink of the late 19th century. Absinthe, often referred to as the "Green Fairy," was a fashionable and somewhat controversial beverage, celebrated for its intoxicating allure and inspiration among artists, writers, and bohemians of the period. Privat-Livemont was celebrated for his ability to combine decorative elegance with commercial purpose. His work for Absinthe Robette reflects the signature traits of Art Nouveau: graceful lines, flowing forms, and a harmonious blend of nature-inspired motifs. Posters like this were not merely advertisements but works of art in their own right, often displayed in cafes, bars, and public spaces, capturing the imagination of passersby. Les Maîtres de l'Affiche (The Masters of the Poster) was a renowned collection of lithographic works, published between 1895 and 1900, that brought together the finest poster art from the greatest artists of the time. Curated by Jules Chéret, the series highlighted the artistic mastery of advertising and included works by notable artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Alphonse Mucha, and Privat-Livemont. Plate 104, featuring Absinthe Robette, is a shining example of the beauty and sophistication celebrated within this series. The late 19th century saw posters emerge as a powerful medium for both art and commerce, revolutionizing the visual landscape of cities. In this golden era, artists like Privat-Livemont elevated the status of posters from functional advertisements to celebrated works of art. Through their ornate designs and expressive use of color and composition, these posters reflected the aesthetic and cultural trends of the time. Today, the Absinthe Robette poster remains an enduring symbol of the Art Nouveau movement and a treasured piece of history. As part of Les Maîtres de l'Affiche, it holds significant cultural and artistic value, appealing to collectors, historians, and admirers of vintage advertising art...

The sculpture of fine casting and beautiful patination is sculpted as a bust of a Ariadne in nature with her hair tied up and leaves intwined in her hair. The Bronze sits upon a circular socle with a square base signed to the right hand face Clodion. The Bronze cast after the original during the neoclassical era dating to the second half of the 19th century during the Belle Epoque era (c.1970-1914) circa 1875. Clodion was the alias of Claude Michel (1738-1814) a French born sculptor working in the Rococo style, especially noted for his works in marble, bronze, & terracotta. Many of Clodion’s works feature in museum collections around the world with some of his most pivotal works including The Intoxication of Wine and The Dance of Time. Ariadne In Greek mythology was a Cretan princess and the daughter of King Minos of Crete. Ariadne was known for aiding Theseus escape the Minotaur and then being abandoned by him on the island of Naxos. There, Dionysus saw Ariadne sleeping, fell in love with her, and later married her. Many versions of the myth recount Dionysus throwing Ariadne’s jewelled crown into the sky to create a constellation, the Corona Borealis...

Japanese Earthenware Meiji Period Satsuma Iris Vase by Ryuzan
Located in Newark, England
Meiji Period (1868-1912) From our Japanese collection, we are delighted to offer this Japanese Satsuma Iris Vase Painted by Ryuzan. The Japanese Satsuma vase of tall tapered form features a circular rolled foot rim, slightly pinched base with a tapered body and slightly bulbous opening. The vase is decorated with a central continuous band of bright iris flowers with various shades of green to the stems and beautiful violet petals. The central band is framed by greek key borders and honeycomb geometric patterns to the top and bottom. The vase is signed to the base Ryuzan 龍山 and dates to the Meiji Period (1868-1912) and the late 19th century circa 1895. Satsuma ware is a type of earthenware pottery originating from the Satsuma province in Southern Kyushu, Japan’s third largest island. Meiji Period was an era of Japanese history that spanned from 1868 to 1912. It was the first half of the Empire of Japan, when the Japanese people began to build a paradigm of a modern, industrialised nation state and emergent great power, influenced by Western countries and aesthetics. As a result of radically different ideas, the changes to Japan were profound and it affected the social structure, politics, economy, military, and foreign relations across the board. The period corresponded to the reign of Emperor Meiji and was preceded by the Keio era and was succeeded by the Taisho era. Cultural Art during the Meiji Period was of particular interest to the government and they overhauled the art export market which in turn promoted Japanese arts via various world’s fairs, beginning in Vienna at the world fair in 1873. The government heavily funded the fairs and took an active role organising how Japan’s culture was presented to the world including creating a semi-public company named Kiritsu Kosho Kaisha (First Industrial Manufacturing Company). The Kiritsu Kosho Kaisha was used to promote and commercialise exports of Japanese art and established the Hakurankai Jimukyoku (Exhibition Bureau) to maintain quality standards. For the 1876 Centennial International Exhibition in Philadelphia, the Japanese government created a Centennial Office and sent a special envoy to secure space for the 30,000 items that would be displayed. The Imperial Household also took an active interest in arts and crafts, commissioning works by select artists to be given as gifts for foreign dignitaries further emphasising the high quality and importance of Japanese art. Just before the end of the 19th century in 1890, the Teishitsu Gigeiin (Artist to the Imperial Household) system was created to recognise distinguished artists. These artists were selected for their exceptionally high quality wares and talent in their own industry. Over a period of 54 years Seventy artists were appointed, amongst these were ceramicist Makuzu Kozan and cloisonné enamel artist...

Mahogany is probably one of the largest ‘families’ of hardwood, having many different varieties within its own species. Mahogany has been used for centuries in ship building, house building, furniture making etc and is the core structure of just about every 19th century vanity box, dressing case or jewelry box. It became more of a Victorian trend to dress mahogany with these decorative veneers, such as burr walnut and coromandel, so that the actual mahogany was almost hidden from view. Mahogany itself is a rich reddish brown wood that can range from being plain in appearance to something that is so vibrant, figured and almost three dimensional in effect. Although mahogany was most often used in its solid form, it also provided some beautifully figured varieties of veneer like ‘flame’ mahogany and ‘fiddleback’ mahogany (named after its preferred use in the manufacture of fine musical instruments). Cuban mahogany was so sought after, that by the late 1850s, this particular variety became all but extinct. Scottish leather These chairs are upholstered in top quality Scottish cow...
