Bernardino Capitelli (1589–1639) was an Italian painter and etcher of the Baroque period. He was born in Siena. He became a pupil of Alessandro Casolani, and then of Rutilio Manetti, and between the years 1622 and 1637 was active in both at Rome and at Siena. Among his etchings are a Portrait of Alessandro Casolani, a St. Anthony of Padua (1637), a Marriage of St. Catharine after Correggio, a nocturnal Repose in Egypt after Rutilio Manetti, a Lot and his Daughters after Manetti. He also made a Ceres drinking in the Cottage of the old and a set of twelve plates...

Table Low Sofa Vintage 1950s Map Isle of Man John Speed 1610 Thomas Durham 1595
Located in BUNGAY, SUFFOLK
- The juxtaposition of modern design and this ancient map create a unique small table and conversation piece
- This is the first map featuring the Isle of Man on its own.
- It is also the first map of the Island based on an actual survey, undertaken by Thomas Durham 1595 and was first published by Speed in 1605-1611 and reprinted many times over the next century. This is the second state or print from 1610.
The map is inset within a fruitwood box frame with a glass top. Supported by tapering stick legs.
The map is based on a survey (and presumably a MS map) by Thomas Durham, of whom nothing is known other that he was paid by Sir Thomas Gerrard to make a survey of the Island. This survey, almost certainly for military purposes, arose from the disputed possession of the Island during which time Elizabeth had assumed control in order to prevent the Scots or the Spanish from using the Island as a base.
Speed had used the Durham Map in his slightly earlier 4-sheet wall map showing invasions and battles of c1603/4 [ref: Shirley #261] - there are some differences from this 1605/10 map - Port Eran (rather than Earn on 1605);Knockalo point (= Contrary Hd) not on 1605;Spalbrecke shown west of Calf rather than E as on 1605/10. Thus it is possible that the Durham Map had even more detail than Speed used in his derived version.
In sea are four mythical beasts with riders: to NW of Island Unicorn with Scottish flag...

Penitent Magdalene and St. John the Baptist, oil on slate, early 17th century
Located in Milan, IT
The figure of the Magdalene emerges from the
darkness, leaning to follow the curve of the stone
support; it is depicted vaulted with an interrogative
air towards the dark, as if in an attitude of listening,
the left hand raised and the other leaning on the
"memento mori" very shortened. In front of her a
scourge and the jar of ointment.
Painted en pendant, Saint John the Baptist is depicted
as a young man, with a lamb at his feet, in his hand
the processional cross with the banner "exception
agnus dei", while with his right hand he draws from
the source of water, recalling the episode that will see
Jesus Christ baptized.
In both paintings the figures stand out in a strong and
incisive way thanks to the black that characterizes the
slate plate on which they are depicted.
Historical-critical analysis:
We are faced with two examples of oil painting on
stone. The beginnings of this particular technique are
to be placed in the first half of the sixteenth century:
after some fifteenth-century experiments it is with
Sebastiano del Piombo that the genre takes hold in
the sixteenth century. There were different types of
support used, also linked to their availability:
amethyst, marble in various colors, alabaster and
blackboard. The reasons underlying this technical
choice refer to Renaissance artistic theories: it is no
coincidence that the painter who most often
experimented with oil painting on marble...

Early 17th Century Roman School Praying Madonna Painting Oil on Canvas
Located in Milan, IT
Roman school, late 16th-early 17th century Praying Madonna
Oil on canvas, 81 x 69 cm
Frame 83 x 95.5 cm
A divine whiteness reverberates with vibrant luster on the maphorion of the present Virgin. The palpable iridescence that structures the thin rosaceous garment, woven with the same fresh light, produces a slight rustle when she takes her hands off. The Madonna in fact takes a prayerful pose, opening her palms to underline her fervent ecstatic intention; the white neck is rendered with perishable fullness of pigments, like the hands, perfectly alive, and the very shiny eyes. With fine shrewdness the artist of the present styles the Virgin's hair with thin white ribbons, exacerbating the purity. An evocative light falls gently on the bust, a materialized sign of divine glory.
The present can be traced back to the late Mannerist climate that prevailed in the capital after the emanation of the Tridentine council (1545-1563). The late Mannerist licenses that can still be seen there, such as the intense lyricism in the stylistic code adopted by the artist, are innervated in the new basic catechetical intent, which at the end of the century produced a certain figurative rigorism. The present, however, still responds to that extraordinary Roman dynamism that raised the capital to a bulwark for the entire mannerist lesson, matched only by a second artistic center, the Florentine one. The engaging carriage of the Virgin reflects the contemporary examples of Giuseppe Valeriano (1542-1596), a Jesuit painter, returning in the Marriage of the Virgin of the Roman Church of Jesus, as well as in the Madonna of Sorrows in the Recanati Altarpiece, equal ardor. But it is in the Assumption of the Virgin painted in four hands with Scipione Pulzone...
