Sartorial Elegance of Kaluga: A Merchant and a Woman in Traditional Attire, 1814
Located in Langweer, NL
The two engravings illustrate the regional dress of inhabitants from Kaluga, Russia, highlighting the unique characteristics of their traditional attire:
1. **A Woman from Kalouga in Her Summer Dress:** This engraving would depict a woman dressed in the light, comfortable attire appropriate for the warmer season. Her outfit includes a long, flowing skirt and a bodice or blouse that is both decorative and practical. The woman's dress is adorned with local patterns and embroidery unique to the Kaluga region, reflecting the summer palette and style of the time.
2. **A Merchant of Kalouga:** The engraving of the merchant would typically show a man in the attire suitable for his profession, which includes practical yet presentable clothing. A merchant's outfit consists of a long coat, vest, and trousers, along with accessories such as a hat and boots. The attire would reflect his status and need for mobility and comfort as he conducts his business.
William Alexander’s "Picturesque Representations of the Dress and Manners of the Russians" serves as a significant historical compendium, capturing the essence of early 19th-century Russian dress...

19th Century Engraving Ottoman Empire Janizary of Arabia, 1818
Located in Langweer, NL
PETREA, which is the smallest of the three Arabias, is barren. Deserta, obtains its name from the poverty of its soil, excepting the vicinity of the Euphrates, the country being a sandy desert. Felix, is named from the fertility of its soil, which, compared with the others, is rich and worthy cultivation; the inhabitants, nevertheless, lead wandering lives for the purpose of pasturing their flocks, or become robbers, as the caravans passing between Bassora and Aleppo, or Egypt and Mecca, frequently experience. The celebrated Mahomet was a native of this country, by whose arms, and those of his followers, the faith which he inculcated has been spread over so large a portion of the globe. The chief who has the government of Arabia Felix...

Pair of Coalport Porcelain Lozenge Dishes, Birds & Flowers Patt.759, 1815-1820
By Coalport Porcelain
Located in London, GB
This is a spectacular pair of oval dishes made by Coalport between 1815 and 1820. The dishes bear the famous and very wonderful bird pattern with the number 759. Panels with stunning hand painted birds and flowers are set in a cobalt blue background with rich gilt decoration.
We also have two plates available in this pattern; please see separate listings. This pattern is very desired and doesn't come to the market often, so this is a rare opportunity.
Coalport was one of the leading potters in 19th and 20th Century Staffordshire. They worked alongside other great potters such as Spode, Davenport and Minton, and came out with many innovative designs. When we say "Coalport" we usually think of the one Coalport factory that became famous, but in its beginning years there were two factories, one run by John Rose and the other by his brother Thomas Rose. Thomas Rose went into partnership with Robert Anstice and Robert Horton and they were located directly opposite John Rose, across the canal. The brothers' factories had much in common with each other and they shared many different shapes and patterns. Ultimately, the John Rose factory proved more profitable and John Rose bought Thomas' factory in 1814, making it the one Coalport factory that became so famous. Many of the Coalport items, of either factory, are now collectors' items.
The stunning thing about pattern 759 is that each bird is different, as well as each flower formation. All birds and flowers are painted carefully in their own colours; they are all different species. Each bird is an individual with its own expression; in fact I once had a large dinner service...
