Antique Sterling Silver Mug
Located in Jesmond, Newcastle Upon Tyne
A fine and impressive small antique 17th century English sterling silver mug; an addition to our silverware collection. This fine and impressive antique William & Mary* sterling silver mug has a cylindrical tapering form. The surface of this hand raised silver mug is embellished with the impressive engraved chinoiserie decoration depicting simplified figures farming. The decoration to the body incorporates an organic bordered cartouche ornamented with the contemporary engraved initials 'SH'. The body of this sterling silver mug is further embellished with bands of tooled decoration, in addition to applied moulded decoration to the upper and lower rims. This 17th century silver mug is fitted with an impressive cast silver S scroll handle ornamented with thread decoration. Such examples from this period are rare to the market and becoming increasing difficult to locate. * This period of history saw the co-reign of King William III and Queen Mary II from 1689 until her death in 1694. Mary was the princess royal and daughter of Charles I and William III, who was also known as William of Orange, was the sovereign Prince of Orange from birth, Stadtholder of Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Guelders, and Overijssel in the Dutch Republic from the 1670s. NOTE: After surviving the Great Fire of London the records at the London Assay office were destroyed by fire in 1681; their catalogues and documentation began again in 1697. Due to this unfortunate event we are unable to associate a maker to this mug. Condition This 17th century silver mug is an excellent gauge of silver, excellent quality and in excellent condition. The engraved decoration is all crisp in keeping with age. Full hallmarks struck to the underside of the mug are very clear. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this small antique silver...

Silver Plated Cocktail / Drinks Tray by Hukin & Heath c.1930
By Hukin & Heath
Located in Bath, GB
A very elegant art deco silver plated cocktail tray with it's simple design and stylish shaped handles. The underside is fully marked for the highly collectable silversmith, Hukin and Heath. Excellent condition measuring 18" x 6 5/8" x 1". Hukin & Heath (active 1855 – 1953) Hukin & Heath was an important British manufacturer, active between 1855 and 1953, specializing in silver and electroplate. The company is best known for its skillfully manufactured reproductions of Persian and Japanese pieces, mainly silver and electroplated wares, that were produced under the guidance of Dr. Christopher Dresser. The production of the Hukin & Heath eastern-like pieces experienced its peak between the 1870s and 1880s. The business was established in 1855 by Jonathan Wilson Hukin and John Thomas Heath. The company entered the market as manufacturing silversmiths and electroplaters. The company’s silver mark was entered in 1875 in the Birmingham Assay Office, which was followed by the entry of the mark of the firm’s founders, Jonathan Wilson Hukin and John Thomas Heath, in 1879 in the London Assay Office. By that time, Hukin & Heath already had several showrooms at 19 Charterhouse Street, Holborn, and a workshop at Imperial Works, Great Charles Street, Birmingham. As for the company’s trade mark, it combines the initials H & H, standing for Hukin & Heath, that is accompanied by an eagle. One of the brightest pages of Hukin & Heath's history is the time when the company collaborated with Britain’s most famous independent designer, Dr. Christopher Dresser, who promoted and contributed enormously to the British Art Nouveau...

Important Sterling Silver & Guilloche Enamel Cocktail Shaker by David Andersen
By David Andersen
Located in Bath, GB
Not a cocktail shaker, a work of art by master Norwegian goldsmith's, David Andersen; certainly a rare and important piece of holloware for the David Andersen devotee or advanced barware collector. We have never seen a cocktail shaker by this artist or any cocktail shaker covered in guilloche enamel; it could possibly have been commissioned piece dating to the 1950's. The shaker is made from solid sterling silver and is fully marked on the underside and signed by David Andersen, Norway. The elegant modernist shape is engine turned and in turn showcased by the glossy golden yellow enamel, all without damage. The lid once removed acts as a cup. Museum quality in superb condition measuring approximately 4" max. in diameter x 9" tall. David Andersen The David Andersen company is a fourth generation family owned business. David Andersen (1843 -1901) was the son of a Norwegian tenant farmer. At 19 he became an apprentice to a Silversmith in Oslo where he studied enamelling technique. These were incorporated into designs made for English firms in London. During 1876, Andersen opened his own goldsmith workshop in Christiania (Oslo.) He became one of Norway's most renowned and celebrated silversmiths. In 1899 his firm had 121 employees, 29 of which were women. By the time of his death in 1901 his Oslo workshop was producing flatware, holloware, and jewellery which was exhibited at International Expos in Europe. Since the 1920s many fine contemporary designers have worked for the David Andersen firm. including the modernist designer Harry Sorby...

Dimensions Height:- 12.5cm Width and depth:- 15.9cm Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point. Victoria, Lady de Rothschild (1949-2021 Victoria was born and spent her formative years in the sunshine of Florida; the warm rays and the life-style of Palm Beach brought her a freedom of spirit that remained with her throughout her life and informed and shaped her taste. Later the family moved to Manhattan; her mother, Marcia Lou Whitney Schott, was a woman of great poise and style and remained a huge and lasting inspiration to her daughter. After coming to London, as a young adult, to dip her toe into British culture, she went back to the US and gained a degree in economics at Trinity College Hartford. Three years later, through mutual friends she met and married Sir Evelyn de Rothschild. They returned to the UK and made their homes in London and in the Rothschild family house in Buckinghamshire; Victoria bringing to the formal landscape of these two houses a transatlantic chic and her own particular quiet exoticism. The history of collecting in the Rothschild family is meticulously documented and was well known to Victoria, it was music to her ears. She continued the tradition and over a period of 40 years gathered together a remarkable and eclectic collection of furniture, glass, china, silver and jewellery. She bought instinctively and decisively; in later years the collection was curated by her great friend, decorator and dress designer, Tomasz Starzewski. There was nothing that Victoria enjoyed more than entertaining her friends and giving them exquisitely wrapped presents. In her last flat, she had a room entirely set aside for present wrapping. It was here that she kept exotic Japanese tissue papers in graded shades, antique rolls of striped ribbons and haute couture silk ones, ready for when a friend had a birthday. Entertaining remained one of her greatest pleasures, and she did this on two levels: the very large dinners for 200 or 250 people, to the more intimate events for family, friends, children and grandchildren. Whatever the circumstances, like an impresario rising to the challenge, she would set to work, with an awesome attention to detail that seemed effortless; she was brimming full of ideas. I remember in particular one birthday dinner when the ceiling of the dining room was covered with hovering aubergine coloured balloons, echoing the violet napkins below. Her large-scale entertainments were memorable; there was an anniversary dinner at Lords Cricket Ground, where the tablecloths were made of white cricket flannel and boiled brisket was served, so simple, witty, understated, whilst Rory Bremner provided the cabaret. On the occasion of her daughter’s 21st birthday, she transformed the Royal College of Art into a replica of the 20th century nightclub ‘El Morocco’ in New York for the evening, with Manhattan taxis waiting outside to take the guests home. Victoria’s greatest talent however was in creating tablescapes. This was almost like choreography, and there was always an element of the unexpected. The starting point was a textured fabric - her version of a tablecloth - be it a woven Kente from Ghana, a patchwork quilted sari from India, or a gossamer light runner; the variety of texture and colour enthralled her. She would lay the table, instinctively moving glass, silver, porcelain and flowers around, embellishing, intermingling traditional and contemporary, searching for a harmony that lived up to her own perfectionism. At times she would choose her favourite 18th century Chantilly porcelain plates - even when there were children present - with delicate blue sprays, surrounding a centrepiece of fifteen to twenty Chinese tulip vases. There were never side plates or bread knives - it was a pared down aesthetic, not an excessive one. White Murano goblets and Georg Jensen contemporary silver pitchers would add sparkle and freshness; the result looked like a 16th century Dutch still life. At other events, the table would become a playful study in the juxtaposition of colour, using her gently multi coloured 50’s retro plates, Balinese silver rimmed lacquered bowls and glass tutti-frutti tumblers, made by the Rothschilds’ cousins, the Brandolinis, in Venice. The drinks trays in all her houses will stay in my memory for many years to come. Victoria’s signature Baccarat decanters would stand proud; around them a cluster of delicate early 20th century glasses engraved with the Rothschild crest...
