Arne Ungermann: 'Den Permanente' 1956 original poster Mermaid Copenhagen Danish
Located in London, GB
Arne Ungermann (1902-1981) 'Den Permanente', "The Permanente Exhibition", poster (1956) Lithographic poster 84 x 61 cm The Danish artist Arne Ungermann designed this poster in 1956 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Den Permanente in Copenhagen. Den Permanente, or the Permanent Exhibition, celebrated Danish art, craft, and design, and operated between the 1930s and 1980s. The Danish silversmith Kay Bojesen came up with the idea for the exhibition, which also served as a shop where customers could buy Danish art and crafts. Bojesen's idea became a reality when Christian Grauballe, director of the iconic Danish design company Holmegaard, invested in it in 1931. Den Permanente became an icon of Danish 20th century design, selling furniture, glassware, lighting, ceramics, jewellery, and textiles. Bojesen is most famous for his wooden monkey design, which Ungermann features in his poster. The motif of the mermaid emerging from the sea is a motif drawn from the tales of Hans Christian Andersen, but made modern - she breaks the surface of the ocean in order to marvel at the treasure trove of man-made objects exhibited at Den Permanente. The notable Little Mermaid statue...

New College, View from the Master's Lodgings lithograph by John Malchair
Located in London, GB
To see our other views of Oxford and Cambridge, scroll down to "More from this Seller" and below it click on "See all from this Seller" - or send us a message if you cannot find the view you want. John Baptist Malchair (1730 – 1812) View from the Master's Lodgings, New College, Oxford (1929) Lithograph 33 x 46 cm A 1929 lithograph from a 1767 watercolour of New College by John Malchair. The artist's composition highlights the pale stone of New College on a winter's day. The chapel's spires stretch upward into a cold, cloud-filled sky, as do the bare branches of the trees. Malchair's watercolour (which is held by the Ashmolean museum) was reproduced as a lithograph in 1929, to be published in the "Oxford Almanack". The Oxford Almanack was an annual almanac published by the Oxford University Press for the University of Oxford from 1674 through 2019 (when printing sadly ceased due to "dwindling interest"). The almanac traditionally included engravings or lithographs of the University and information about the upcoming year. Other almanac artists have included James Basire, Michael Burghers, J. M. W. Turner, and John Piper. Malchair was a German-born watercolourist, violinist, drawing master, and collector of traditional European music. He is described as “one of the most distinctive figures of eighteenth century Oxford”, and is recognised as having been an influence on later landscape artists, including John Constable. Malchair was a talented artist, producing hundreds of paintings of English landscapes...

1943 Kawasaki "Type 3" Japanese fighter plane identification poster WW2
Located in London, GB
To see our other original vintage warbird aeroplane posters, photographs and paintings, scroll down to "More from this Seller" and below it click on "See all from this Seller" 1943 MacArthur name "Tony" Kawasaki "Type 3" - World War II Japanese fighter plane Original aeroplane recognition poster (1943) 63x47cm A particularly unusual style of aeroplane identification poster, owing to the very arty images. Most such posters rely on very plain silhouettes, this series - and we have many in this series - have a much more arty approach to the task with shading and an interesting angle view. This Kawasaki Ki-61 (known as "Tony" in the Allied code) was the only fighter with a liquid-cooled engine that the Japanese Army Air Force put into the field during World War II. It was this that made the Tony so unlike the other Japanese planes that the Allies believed it to be German- or Italian-made. While the engine was a license-built version of a German Daimler Benz engine, the rest of the aircraft was an all-Japanese design. The Tony proved to be a match for Allied fighters, due chiefly to its particularly heavy armament, good protective armour, and high speed dives. The Ki-61 was one of the few interceptors that could reach the same altitude as the the American B-29 Superfortresses (posters of which are also available). When the Tony entered combat during 1943, it could outrun, outdive and outclimb every Allied fighter except the P-38 Lightning. It was the first fighters to be equipped with fuel tank...

By David Loggan
Located in London, GB
To see our other views of Oxford and Cambridge, scroll down to "More from this Seller" and below it click on "See all from this seller" - or send us a message if you cannot find the view you want. David Loggan (1634 - 1692) Magdalene College, Cambridge (1690) Engraving 38 x 43 cm Loggan's view of Magdalene from the 'Cantabrigia Illustrata'. Loggan was born to English and Scottish parents, and was baptised in Danzig in 1634. After studying engraving in Danzig with Willem Hondius (1598-1652 or 1658), he moved to London in the late 1650s, going on to produce the engraved title-page for the folio 1662 Book of Common Prayer. He married in 1663 and moved to Nuffield in Oxfordshire in 1665. Loggan was appointed Public Sculptor to the nearby University of Oxford in the late 1660s, having been commissioned to produce bird’s-eye views of all the Oxford colleges. He lived in Holywell Street as he did this. The 'Oxonia Illustrata' was published in 1675, with the help of Robert White (1645-1704). Following its completion, Loggan began work on his equivalent work for Cambridge; the 'Cantabrigia Illustrata' was finally published in 1690, when he was made engraver to Cambridge University. The 'Oxonia Illustrata' also includes an engraving of Winchester College (Winchester and New College share William of Wykeham as their founder) whilst the 'Cantabrigia Illustrata' includes one of Eton College (which shares its founder, Henry VIII, with King’s College). Bird’s-eye views from this era required a particular talent as an architectural perspectivist; it was not until 1783 that it became possible for artists to ascend via hot air balloons and view the scenes they were depicting from above. Loggan thus had to rely on his imagination in conceiving the views. Loggan’s views constitute the first accurate depictions of the two Universities, in many ways unchanged today. Whilst the Oxford engravings were produced in reasonable numbers and ran to a second edition by Henry Overton (on thicker paper and with a plate number in Roman numerals in the bottom right-hand corner), those of Cambridge were printed in much smaller numbers. The Dutchman Pieter van der Aa published some miniature versions of the engravings for James Beverell’s guidebook to the UK, 'Les Delices de la Grande Bretagne' (circa 1708). The contemporary artist Andrew Ingamells...
