A 1929 lithograph from a 1767 watercolour of New College by John Malchair. The artist's composition highlights the pale stone of New College on a winter's day. The chapel's spires stretch upward into a cold, cloud-filled sky, as do the bare branches of the trees.
Malchair's watercolour (which is held by the Ashmolean museum) was reproduced as a lithograph in 1929, to be published in the "Oxford Almanack". The Oxford Almanack was an annual almanac published by the Oxford University Press for the University of Oxford from 1674 through 2019 (when printing sadly ceased due to "dwindling interest"). The almanac traditionally included engravings or lithographs of the University and information about the upcoming year. Other almanac artists have included James Basire, Michael Burghers, J. M. W. Turner, and John Piper.
Malchair was a German-born watercolourist, violinist, drawing master, and collector of traditional European music. He is described as “one of the most distinctive figures of eighteenth century Oxford”, and is recognised as having been an influence on later landscape artists, including John Constable. The Ventura was a twin-engine medium bomber and patrol bomber of World War II. It first entered combat in Europe as a bomber with the RAF in late 1942. Designated PV-1 by the United States Navy (US Navy), it entered combat in 1943 in the Pacific. The bomber was also used by the United States Army Air Forces and by British Commonwealth forces in several guises, including antishipping and antisubmarine search and attack.

These posters were designed to be used as temporary stops when the usual stop required amendment for instance owing to road works or similar events. Printed on paper they were designed to be posted up at the alternative site, possibly over a different sort of stop (bus stop, coach stop, request stop, etc.).
Working with Edward Johnson's special typeface created for London Transport, Hans Schleger - or Zero as he signed himself - adopted the famous roundel used by London Underground for use at Bus Stops. Born in Germany, Schleger was an influential graphic designer. After serving during the First World War, he studied at the Berlin Kunstgewerbeschule, being taught by Emil Orlik. The same year Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus at Weimar and Schleger learned the same principles of breaking down the barriers between architecture, design, fine art and craft. A firm believer in the Bauhaus principles of simplicity in design and reduction to essentials, these may be seen in the clean lines of the roundel.
In 1924 he moved to New York, applying Modernism to American advertising, and then returned to Berlin in 1929 working for the British advertising agency Crawfords, where he met Edward McKnight Kauffer who introduced him to Jack Beddington the head of advertising at Shell Mex...

Henry Cliffe was born in Scarborough, Yorkshire in 1919. After studying at the Bath Academy of Art he opened up a lithography studio in the city, where he designed surreal forms until his retirement in 1981. Cliffe's work was exhibited internationally to wide acclaim.
