Frame, Wood, Late 17th-Early 18th Century
Located in Madrid, ES
Framework. Carved wood, late 17th-early 18th century.
Rectangular frame that presents a "base structure" of straight lines, combining moldings of different widths and finishes (inside, a golden band with Fine plant details towards the corners; then a thin red one, and a wider green one, these two the latter imitating marble; outside, another fine gilt molding), enhanced with a series of carvings of vegetal elements in the corners (symmetrical composition), two ovoid elements on the long sides and a highly elaborate cresting with vegetal elements, rockeries, scrolls, flowers and imitation of fabrics (which are joined with those ovoid elements mentioned).
The combination of red, green and gold is common in certain types of frames (compare, for example, with the terracotta of Salamanca made around the middle of the 16th century by Juan de Juni, which is kept in the Victoria and Albert Museum). On it, a series of carvings with a lot of movement and depth have been added, showing Baroque influence (reminiscent in certain details of works such as the frame of the Immaculate Conception by Alonso Cano...

Child Jesus of the Passion. Wood. Andalusian School, Spain, 18th century.
Located in Madrid, ES
Baby Jesus Passionist or Passionate. Carved and polychrome wood. Andalusian school, 18th century.
Seated on a rocky promontory on a circular base, the polychrome wood carving of the Child Jesus is presented in a long-sleeved dress, tied with a belt and fluttering in the wind, revealing his feet. He keeps his eyes relatively low, with his hands half raised, in a meditative attitude. The carved suit presents a stew or polychromy with gilding of plant elements and other derivatives of textile work.
Iconographically, it is necessary to remember a theme of Flemish origin known as "Christ on the cold stone", in which Jesus is sitting on rocks on Golgotha waiting for his crucifixion, a more common theme in sculpture (Santa Cruz de la Palma...) than in painting. (Prado Museum by Juan de Flandes). Of great importance in Spain, it derives from "the" "Lords of Humility and Patience" (Los Silos by Francisco Alonso de la Raya in the first half of the 17th century; San Agustín in La Orotava; Puente Genil in Córdoba; etc.). It is clear that the present carving is a Child Jesus related to his own Passion by his expression, the rocks and the hands, placed as if they had held something. Stylistically, the influence of the Baroque (material, theme, etc.) in the carving is clearly noticeable, something common in Spanish works of the 18th century. The details most linked to the Rococo would be the movement of the dress fabrics, the details of the polychromy of the suit, the proportions, etc. Compare the piece with the Niño del Dolor attributed to Alonso Cano (it is also attributed to Luisa Ignacia Roldán, “La Roldana”) which is apparently in the church of San Fermín de los Navarros in Madrid. Or that of the Daimiel Discalced Carmelite Convent in Ciudad Real, dating from the 17th century. Or that of the Oratory of San Felipe Neri in Cádiz, dating from the 18th century. One preserved in the Convent of Santa Paula in Seville, with carved clothing and holding a cross and a chalice, standing. Also with the Child Jesus of Luis Álvarez...
