Worship

Worship

The active conscience that one lives in a fully dynamic, unpredictable and ever changing ecosystem, channels our inner strength towards the notion that every single element on Earth depends on everything else which lies around. Altars, prayers, sacrifices, thoughts, reflections and gestures can and should be part of our sacred relationship with Nature, as long as it's done with the conscience that Nature doesn't exist to serve and protect us, but rather to accommodate our existence in a mutual exchange that should be filled with respect and reverence. My religion and place of worship is called Nature, but no one can question the impact of this stunningly positioned church in the Dolomites (Italy). This is the gorgeous San Giovanni Church, located in Val di Funes, with the massive Geisler/Odle peaks behind it. Story: If there was one main single reason for me to travel to the Dolomites this was it. Photographing this gorgeous church with golden pine trees in the background is something that had been filling my imagination for long. What I did not expect was that there would be massive snowfall in the area, so I also got the bonus of fresh snow around the church. And because dreams never come easy, this photo was only possible after my 4th visit to this place, during the 15 day stay at the Dolomites, after three not-good-enough previous tries. The weather forecast was promising for sunrise, so I decided to sleep on the camper near the spot, and finally magic happened and Nature greeted me with proper light that would make justice to this place. José Ramos is a conceptual landscape photographer, storyteller and psychiatrist from Portugal, currently living in Lisbon. He started his photographic career eighteen years ago, and his images have been published several times in National Geographic printed magazines and other international photography magazines. His work has been exhibited several times in Portugal, as well as featured on Discovery, The Telegraph, CNN Travel, Sony and others. Beyond image making and teaching, he is an Ambassador for conservation projects like OnAMission and Give Back to Nature, and has also collaborated with many international photography and technology brands. His works are sold as large format fine art prints worldwide and are now also available for sale as exclusive 1/1 NFTs, joined by high quality large format prints. Strongly focusing on long exposure technique and storytelling, his images are multi-layered, from the immediate attention-grabbing natural scenes with exquisite light, to the symbolic details of archetypical natural elements, along with the written reflections accompanying each artwork. Dividing his time between the two careers as a professional photographer and a physician specialized in psychiatry, José feels that there is a strong creative synergy between both paths, with the commonalities and differences of each discipline mutually enriching and fostering his artworks. On one hand the lessons taught by Nature have always been precious for the relationship with his patients and, in parallel, his professional experience running Photo-Therapy projects with patients showed him how powerful photographs can be as a catalyst to access and discover deep emotions within. All his images have a deep embedded concept and associated story, focused on the relationship between Humankind and Nature. Conservation, ecology, existentialism, awareness, spirituality, emotion and contemplation are some of the most important themes José tries to explore through his images.

"Worship" - Jose Ramos Photography - Behind The Scenes

Personal Manifesto

To me, all of my images have a story. They are all born from that special encounter between the scenes that once awed me in some way, and the things that then stayed on my inside, dormant, waiting for a moment to be expressed. In my case, the audacity of adding words to a photograph does not seek to embellish or intellectualize, nor does it seek to enrich something that is already so rich in its aesthetic origin. In truth, the only thing I look for in this combination of elements is the attempt to make justice to these unique experiences, sharing them in the only way that feels "whole".

And so when my images are captured, edited, reflected upon and written, there are two persons in them. The "photographer" who finds himself hypnotized by the endless shapes, the primordial play of light and color, the visceral memory of feeling the violent and unpredictable waves hitting the shoreline rocks, immersed in the contemplation of something so much greater than us. The "psychiatrist" who, with less innocence and plenty of years on his shoulders witnessing so many shapes of suffering, here once again learns the lesson that the most chaotic scenes can always become places of serene contemplation, having the potential of being transformed by the camera (or by life), when enough time is given to them, to mature and be revealed.

In all my images there are two people, not always in agreement, but always holding hands. Two crossing paths, questioning themselves, discussing, arguing, but also nurturing each other, and it is precisely from this tension, passion and need for expression that everything I share comes from.

This is part of my story, and Nature is one of the main protagonists that propels it forward.

Conservation, existentialism, awareness, spirituality, emotion and contemplation are some of the most important themes I try to explore through my images. Over the years, all experiences combined, my portfolio matured into a specific creative signature, looking for immersive compositions carried by strong visual lines and exquisite light, based on showing the most awe inspiring and special moments I have witnessed in Nature, joining them with stories and reflections that wish to offer the viewer a place of contemplation, emotion and, ideally, transformation.

All my images are the result of a long process of planning, capture, selection and careful editing, and none of them is a digital composite, as the experience of being in Nature and capturing it through the camera is my chosen starting point upon which everything else is built. This implies accepting Nature’s virtues but also its endless challenges, and a deep conviction that no shortcuts should be taken to create a meaningful and truthful bridge between being “there” and then sharing the artistic interpretation of an unrepeatable moment.
