Morning Story, Abstract Oil Painting
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
A blend of muted greens, grays, and earth tones evokes a moody landscape. The composition suggests a horizon where the sky meets a textured field. Bold brushstrokes and layered colors create a sense of depth and movement, capturing the essence of a landscape in transition. Hints of blue and orange add contrast and intrigue.

About the Artist
Artist Ronda Waiksnis captures nature's visceral beauty in her abstract and expressionist works. Embracing the capriciousness of the creative process, she allows her intuition to guide her, resulting in pieces that feel both organic and unrefined. "My paintings have been found, not built," says Ronda. Rarely using brushes, she applies layers of paint with large palette knives or her fingers, emphasizing the importance of balancing creative abandon and physical control. Ronda operates in a gloriously messy studio, a standalone building behind her house, with a powerful sound system that keeps the vibe carefree and intense. When she's not creating art, Ronda enjoys spending time with her loved ones, playing with her dogs, and savoring a glass of wine.

English 19th century portrait of a dog, Spaniel with game bird in a landscape
Located in Woodbury, CT
This exquisite oil on canvas by Edwin Frederick Holt, depicting a black and white spaniel with a game bird, is a stunning example of Victorian sporting art, painted circa 1863. Holt's exceptional attention to detail brings the subject to life, from the textured fur of the spaniel to the fine feathers of the game bird and the naturalistic landscape in the background. The artist's ability to capture the loyal and determined expression of the dog highlights his skill in portraying both the beauty and character of animals. For art collectors, this painting represents a piece of history, reflecting the 19th-century English tradition of celebrating hunting and companionship with animals through art. Edwin Frederick Holt's works are sought after for their authenticity and fine craftsmanship, making this a valuable addition to any collection of sporting or animal-themed artwork. For interior designers, this piece offers a perfect blend of elegance and charm, suitable for a variety of settings. The warm tones of the landscape and the golden frame add richness to the painting, making it an ideal choice for classic or traditional interiors. It can become a focal point in a study, library, or living room, enhancing the atmosphere with its timeless sophistication. For collectors of canine art, this painting is more than an aesthetic treasure—it is a heartfelt tribute to the enduring bond between humans and their canine companions. Its historical significance, combined with the artist's skill and the beauty of the composition, ensures it will remain a cherished and admired piece for generations to come. in 1830, Edwin Frederick Holt grew up in Hampstead and went on to spend the majority of his adult life in Dunstable. Edwin began his artistic career by studying at the Royal Academy of Art where he went on to win a Silver medal for his work at the age of 24. From this point on, his work continued to get recognized and many of his pieces were entered into exhibitions. In total, Edwin Frederick Holt exhibited 7 paintings at the RoyalAcademy, 12 at the British Institution and 40 at the Royal Society of Arts. Alongside his exhibitions, Edwin Frederick Holt also illustrated in "Farm Animal Portraits...

Bataille de Fleurs (Carnaval of Flowers) from Nice and the Côte d’Azur
Located in Missouri, MO
After Marc Chagall (1887 - 1985) By Charles Sorlier (French, 1921-1990) "Bataille de Fleurs (Carnaval of Flowers)" (from Nice and the Côte d’Azur), 1967 Reference: CS 33 Color Lithograph Image Size: 24 7/16 in x 18 in (62 cm x 45.8 cm) Sheet Size: 29 9/16 in x 20 11/16 in (75 x 52.5 cm) Framed Size: approx. 34 x 27 inches Edition: Numbered 1 of 150 in pencil in the lower left margin and printed on Arches wove paper (aside from an edition of 75 signed and numbered in Roman numerals and 10 artist's proofs). Signature: This work is hand signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 - Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right margin. Marc Chagall was a man of keen intelligence, a shrewd observer of the contemporary scene, with a great sympathy for human suffering. He was born on July 7, 1887 in Vitebsk, Russia; his original name was Moishe Shagal (Segal), but when he became a foremost member of the Ecole de Paris, he adopted French citizenship and the French spelling of his name. Vitebsk was a good-sized Russian town of over 60,000, not a shtetl. His father supported a wife and eight children as a worker in a herring-pickling plant. Sheltered by the Jewish commandment against graven images, the young Chagall never saw so much as a drawing until, one day, he watched a schoolmate copying a magazine illustration. He was ridiculed for his astonishment, but he began copying and improvising from magazines. Both Chagall's parents reluctantly agreed to let him study with Yehuda Pen, a Jewish artist in Vitebsk. Later, in 1906, they allowed their son to study in St. Petersburg, where he was exposed to Russian Iconography and folk art. At that time, Jews could leave the Pale only for business and employment and were required to carry a permit. Chagall, who was in St. Petersburg without a permit, was imprisoned briefly. His first wife, Bella Rosenfeld, was a product of a rich cultivated and intellectual group of Jews in Vitebsk. Chagall was made commissar for the arts for the area, charged with directing its cultural life and establishing an art school. Russian folklore, peasant life and landscapes persisted in his work all his life. In 1910 a rich patron, a lawyer named Vinaver, staked him to a crucial trip to Paris, where young artists were revolutionizing art. He also sent him a handsome allowance of 125 francs (in those days about $24) each month. Chagall rejected cubism, fauvism and futurism, but remained in Paris. He found a studio near Montparnasse in a famous twelve-sided wooden structure divided into wedge-shaped rooms. Chaim Soutine, a fellow Russian Jew...

Romantic Landscape at Sunset - Oil Painting by E. Serra y Auque
Located in Roma, IT
Romantic Landscape at Sunset is a wonderful oil on canvas realized by Enrique Serra y Auque (1859-1918). There is an inscription, the signature on the lower margin at the center: "Enrique Serra Roma". This marvelous Roman lake landscape delimited by the detail of an elegant statue, is painted with acute pictorial sensibility and a very fine technical ability. In very good condition, with a gilded wooden frame included. Enrique Serra y Auque (Barcelona, 1859 - Rome, 1918) Enrique Serra y Auque today famous for his landscapes, showed his artistic talent early. He attended the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Barcelona and was a pupil of Ramon Marti Alsina, now considered the founder of the Catalan landscape school, and the sculptor Domingo Talarn. At the age of twenty, in 1879, he received a scholarship on merit and moved to Rome, where he remained there for the rest of his life. Here he attended the Chigi Academy, became a friend of Mariano Fortuny, one of the greatest Spanish painters of the 19th century after Goya...

Visual art is among the oldest forms of expression, and it has been evolving for centuries. Beautiful objects can provide a window to the past or insight into our current time. Art collecting enhances daily life through the presence of meaningful work. It displays an appreciation for culture, whether a print by Elizabeth Catlett channeling social change or a narrative quilt by Faith Ringgold.

Contemporary art has lured more initiates to collecting than almost any other category, with notable artists including Yayoi Kusama, Marc Chagall, Kehinde Wiley and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Navigating the waiting lists for the next Marlene Dumas, Jeff Koons or Jasper Johns has become competitive.

When you’re living with art, particularly as people more often work from home and enjoy their spaces, it’s important to choose art that resonates with you. While the richness of art with its many movements, styles and histories can be overwhelming, the key is to identify what is appealing and inspiring. Artwork can play with the surrounding color of a room, creating a layered approach. The dynamic shapes and sizes of sculptures can set different moods, such as a bronze by Miguel Guía on a mantel or an Alexander Calder mobile suspended over a table. A wall of art can evoke emotions in an interior while showing off your tastes and interests. A salon-style wall mixing eclectic pieces like landscape paintings with charcoal drawings is a unique way to transform a space and show off a collection.

For art meditating on the subconscious, investigate Surrealists like Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí. Explore Pop art and its leading artists such as Andy Warhol, Rosalyn Drexler and Keith Haring for bright and bold colors. Not only did these artists question art itself, but also how we perceive society. Similarly, 20th-century photography and abstract painting reconsidered the intent of art.

Abstract Expressionists like Helen Frankenthaler and Lee Krasner and Color Field artists including Sam Gilliam broke from conventional ideas of painting, while Op artists such as Yaacov Agam embraced visual trickery and kinetic movement. Novel visuals are also integral to contemporary work influenced by street art, such as sculptures and prints by KAWS.

Realist portraiture is a global tradition reflecting on what makes us human. This is reflected in the work of Slim Aarons, an American photographer whose images are at once candid and polished and appeared in Holiday magazine and elsewhere. Innovative artists Mickalene Thomas and Kerry James Marshall are now offering new perspectives on the form.

Collecting art is a rewarding, lifelong pursuit that can help connect you with the creative ways historic, modern and contemporary artists have engaged with the world. For more tips on piecing together an art collection, see our guide to buying and displaying art.
