Aaron Berkman was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1900. In 1916 Berkman attended the Connecticut League of Art Students, founded by Charles Noel Flagg. Beginning in 1919 he studied under Albertus E. Jones at the Hartford Art School. Berkman was influenced during this time by George Inness and John Singer Sargent and the Old Masters. He received a scholarship to the Museum Art School of Boston in 1921 and then traveled to Europe, remaining there from 1924 through 1925. He spent time in France, Italy, Spain, Holland and Belgium. In 1929 Berkman moved to New York City, continuing a friendship and painting relationship with Milton Avery. He was appointed by the W.P.A. as Director of the WPA Art Center at the 92nd Street Y in New York City. Berkman helped established the A.C.A. William A. Corbett began drawing at an early age. He constructed signs and displays for theaters and nightclubs around Pittsburg. He studied art with Vincent Nesbert at the Pittsburg Art Institute and with Robert Gwathmoy, Roy Hilton, and Robert Laper at the Carnegie Institute of Technology. He also studied painting and sculpture at the Louisville Art Center. Corbett was in the Army Engineers at Fort Knox, Kentucky where he studied, practiced, and had exhibits with army artists there from 1941-1943. He was very much interested in materials and technique, content and style in painting. His favorite Artists were El Greco, Leonardo, Rembrandt, Renoir, Burchfield, and Andrew Wyeth, Jr. He studied two years at Boston museum School with Karl Zerbe, Daivid Aronson and others. He later designed and did art work for General Outdoor Advertising Co. In 1943, he married Ruth Osborne of Louisville and they had one son, Michael. In 1951 he moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida with his family.

Artist Dwight Smith depicts a realistic culinary-themed still life. "The bottle opener was of my dad and mom's from so long ago I don't remember when," shares Dwight. He paints a bright red apple on its side adjacent to it. A focused light source highlights the foreground, while strong contrasts of dark shadows in the background frame the elements.
About the Artist
Dwight Smith depicts commonplace objects with a sense of playfulness and humor. His watercolor still life paintings appear conventional in their soft colors and composed compositions, but upon further observation the juxtaposition of unrelated items make for delightfully surprising combinations and comparisons. This transformation of the everyday, and strong graphic style, lend the work a pop feel. However, pop art is generally cool and ironic. Instead, there is a familiar and comforting sense of kitsch and Americana in Dwight’s subjects. In a similar fashion to the work of American artist Wayne Thiebaud, Dwight paints food and sweets of the American appetite. Doughnuts, hotdogs, and lollipops are captured in all of their potent delight. He plays with scale and composition to bring out a sense of the absurd, but ultimately his goal is to make the viewer smile.

William H. Bailey (American, b. 1930)
Born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, William Bailey became a painter in styles ranging from abstraction to super-real. He earned his B.F.A. and M.F.A. at Yale University and studied with Josef Albers and also had an Alice Kimball English traveling scholarship.
From 1962 to 1969, he taught at Indiana University, and from 1969, was a professor of art at Yale University.
He lives and works in Branford, CT and is a member of the National Academy of Design, elected an Associate in 1983, an Academician in 1994.
Recent one-person exhibitions include Robert Schoelkopf Gallery; Andre Emmerich Gallery; Robert Miller Gallery; Galleria il Gabbiana, Rome; and Galerie Claude Bernard, Paris. Selected group exhibitions include Realism Now, Vassar College Art Museum; 22 Realists, and 7 Realists, both at the Yale University Art Gallery; Decade in Review, Whitney Museum of American Art; and Contemporary American Realism Since 1960,at the Pennsylvania Academy.
His work is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Des Moines Art Center; Art Institute of Chicago; Arkansas Art Center; Hirshhorn Museum; Pennsylvania Academy; St. Louis Museum of Art; Whitney Museum of American Art; and Yale University Art Gallery.
