American artist, Abby Goldstein has been fascinated by the graphic quality of city maps and focuses on their 'inherent reliance to describe, where we are, where we are going and where we have been'. This work on paper serves as a great example of the artist's inclinations towards gentrification and the detailed intricacies, as well as the geometric organization of an expanding world. Abby Goldstein received a BFA from Pratt Institute, NY and a MFA from the School of Visual Arts, NY. She is an Associate Professor of Art and heads the Graphic Design concentration at Fordham University, NY.
Artist statement:
The visual language and design of maps fascinate me. The minutiae and reduction of complex information into lines and shapes found in mapmaking makes up the vocabulary of my recent work. In these drawings I focus on
creating fragmented maps with microscopic enlargements of cities and centers. The detail within the circles suggests that more lies beyond the imaginary borders. The grid acts as a device to establish a structure that I can move within and against; and abstract forms organically grow out of the accumulation of details; building a web of texture and movement.
