About the Item

An interesting and highly decorative chalk drawing by Edvard Andersson, 1929. Drawn on a quite large scale. Signed and dated EA, 1929. A tergo written "Hermes". The drawing is executed in a Cubist style, showcasing Andersson's modernist approach to classical themes. The work features sharp geometric forms and fragmented lines, highlighting the influence of early 20th-century art movements. This drawing was exhibited at "Den Frie Udstilling" in Copenhagen in 1956 (listed as number 457, outside the catalog) and comes from the artist’s estate. Edvard Ferdinand Lassalle Andersson (1891–1967) was a Swedish modernist painter, draftsman, and drawing teacher from Helsingborg. Despite his immense talent, he remains relatively unknown in Sweden, though his work has gained greater recognition abroad. His art has been displayed in prestigious exhibitions in Copenhagen, Paris, and Biarritz. Andersson has been described as a classic modernist with an eclectic approach—he borrowed elements from other artists and transformed them into something uniquely his own. His bold use of color and form demonstrates clear influences from the entire modernist avant-garde, including Matisse, Picasso, Brecht, and Miró. The vibrant color shifts in his paintings are particularly reminiscent of Sonia and Robert Delaunay. While all artists draw inspiration from others, only truly brilliant ones succeed in making it their own artistic language—this is what makes Andersson such a fascinating figure in modern art. He studied at the Technical School in Stockholm and continued his artistic education through study trips to Germany and France. Andersson held solo exhibitions in Helsingborg, Malmö, and Ängelholm and participated in group exhibitions with Sveriges Allmänna Konstförening (Swedish Art Association), Skånes Konstförening (Skåne Art Association), and Helsingborgs Konstförening (Helsingborg Art Association). His works include figure paintings, compositions, and coastal landscapes, executed in oil, gouache, pastel, and charcoal. In addition to his artistic career, he worked as a drawing teacher in Helsingborg. His works are represented in several collections, including the Helsingborg Museum. In Greek mythology, Hermes is the son of Zeus and the nymph Maia. He is the messenger of the gods, known for his speed and cunning nature. Hermes serves as the protector of travelers, merchants, shepherds, and thieves. He is often depicted as a youthful figure with winged sandals and a herald’s staff, symbolizing his role as a swift messenger and guide between worlds. He is also recognized for his playful and mischievous personality, embodying both benevolence and trickery. Andersson’s choice to portray Hermes reflects the early 20th-century fascination with classical mythology, reinterpreted through the fragmented and abstracted forms of Cubism. This fusion of ancient themes with modern artistic techniques underscores Andersson’s ability to absorb influences from the avant-garde and transform them into his own distinctive artistic language.

Positano Village - Sepia Drawing 1920´s
Located in Stockholm, SE
A rare ink and watercolor drawing by Carl Palme, dated 1921 and signed “CP 21,” captures the intimate character of Positano’s narrow alleys. Measuring ca. 20 x 24 cm without frame. Inscribed on the back that it´s a preparatory study for a larger oil painting. Early 20th century works by Palme are scarce. Carl Palme (1879–1960): Painter, Printmaker, and Cosmopolitan Artist. He was born in Stockholm in 1879, the son of bank director Henrik Palme and Anna Lavonius. He grew up on the family estate of Svalnäs, now a guest home and senior residence. From an early age, Palme showed a sensitivity to both literature and art, interests that would later merge in his career as painter, draftsman, printmaker, and author. His artistic education began in London at the Slade School of Fine Art (1900–1901), where he was introduced to modern European currents. From 1902 to 1904, he studied in Munich at Wassily Kandinsky’s art school, absorbing early expressions of color and form. In 1907, Palme moved to Paris, where he became the first Swedish student of Henri Matisse. Together with fellow Scandinavian artists, he was instrumental in founding the Académie Matisse, a collective of young painters who rented a large studio in Paris. Matisse himself visited weekly, critiquing their work and shaping what would later become a decisive wave of modernism in Swedish art. Among the group were such notable names as Isaac Grünewald, Sigrid Hjertén, and Einar Jolin...

Untitled
By Edmund Daniel Kinzinger
Located in Dallas, TX
Edmund D. Kinzinger was born in 1888, to an upper-middle class family in Pforzhein, Germany. In Munich he studied at the Kirr Schule and the Staatliche Akademie, and pursued graduate studies at the Academie Modern, Paris. Before serving in the German Army, Kinzinger was a master student of Adolph Holzel at the Staatcliche Akademie, Stuttgart; he returned to study under Henrich Waldschmidt after nearly five years of artillery service. Several of Kinzinger’s fellow students in Germany, such as Johannes Itten, would go on to be associated with the Bauhaus school. Coming into contact with all manner of artistic influences in Europe after World War One, Kinzinger’s work may be viewed as a “synthesis” of modernist styles. The influences of Abstract Expressionist, Cubist, and Futurist styles in Kinzinger’s work at this time are symptomatic of his contact with the likes of Hans Hofmann, Pablo Picasso, and Alexander Archipenko. Philip Van Keuren...
