About the Artist: Emil James Bisttram (1895-1976) Emil James Bisttram, born in Hungary in 1895, emigrated to the U.S. at age 11. After studying under prominent artists like Leon Kroll and Jay Hambidge, Bisttram’s work evolved into spiritual and abstract art influenced by artists like Wassily Kandinsky. He gained recognition as an influential figure in the American art scene, particularly in New York, where he taught at the Parsons School of Design and the New York Master Institute of United Arts. In 1931, Bisttram received a Guggenheim Fellowship to study mural painting in Mexico under Diego Rivera, which was pivotal to his artistic development. In 1932, Bisttram moved to Taos, New Mexico, where he founded the Taos School of Art, later known as the Bisttram School of Fine Art. His school focused on spiritualism and meditation, influencing artists like Florence Miller Pierce. In 1938, he co-founded the Transcendental Painting Group, which became a key movement in modern American art history, blending spirituality and abstraction. Exhibitions & Recognition Bisttram’s works have been exhibited at prestigious institutions such as the Philadelphia Watercolor Club, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. His art is part of notable collections at the Roerich Museum, Albright Art Gallery, and public murals in Washington, D.C., and Ranger, Texas.
