About the Item
A meticulously rendered trio of whales, a mother whale and its two children, are at the center of this drawing and the prominent feature of this mandala. Many cultures associate whales with compassion, spiritual awareness, wisdom and good luck, a widely held symbol for long lasting love as whales mate for life. Intricately drawn patterns and small vignettes containing seascapes with rippling waves, planets and stars surround the majestic sea creatures and the edges of the mandala.
This drawing is entirely hand-drawn using only pencil on paper. Framed in an off-white wooden frame, 22.25 x 22.25 inches (unframed), 25.25 x 25.25 inches (framed). Signed and titled on the back of the frame.
Japanese-born artist Michiyo Ihara uses only paper and pencil to create artwork that expresses the complexity of the universe. Beginning at the center of the white paper, she makes her first mark. Building outward with amazing skill and intricacy, she rotates the paper to continue the drawing. Each tiny symbol, sometimes animal, plant or planet, exists within a cell-like membrane. One little universe begets another as they grow outward in a beautiful, imperfect near symmetry. Ihara begins each drawing title with the word snowflake to reference the infinite and unique possibilities of creation.

Stardust Cephalopod is a bioluminescent flowering squid, existing both in the depths of the sea and the far reaches of the Milky Way Galaxy. She melds together the sciences of the oceans and the stars, linking the two natural spaces as one beautiful entity. Stardust Cephalopod is a mixed media work created with pen, ink, & collage.
About the Artist:
Jenny Brown is a visual artist living and working in Providence, Rhode Island, whose primary mediums are drawing, collage, and works on paper. Her work brings to life a mythical world of sea creatures and celestial beings, realized through her love of paper ephemera. Jenny studied art at Bennington College and received her MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2005.
