Raphaëlle Pia is a painter and art teacher who trained at the École des Beaux-Arts de Grenoble before entering the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris. First exhibited in various painting salons from the 1970s onwards, her work was later shown in numerous French art galleries.
Raphaëlle Pia evolved within the Support/Surface collective, which brought together artists such as Claude Viallat and Daniel Dezeuze around shared plastic and theoretical proposals. At the end of the 1960s, these artists reconsidered the problematics of abstract art inherited from the previous generation. They redefined the role and function of traditional pictorial media (canvas and color), advocating a freer use of them.
Raphaëlle Pia's work draws on these reflections on the components of the painting. Driven by a desire to occupy the surface in new ways, the artist explores the laws of composition through different ways of applying pictorial matter. She questions the brushstroke by liberating the painter's gesturality. Béatrice Comte writes of the artist: "The obstinate passion with which Raphaëlle Pia searches for her truth in painting can be read as a quest for identity (...). Matter is the true subject of this moving artist".
Here, Raphaëlle Pia uses spontaneous splashes and sprays of paint, drawing on the body's own movements. The colors thus thrown are superimposed randomly on the surface of the paper, creating an inimitable rendering. The artist's gesture, guided by chance, breaks with traditional painting codes, since the entire surface is treated in the same way, with no predefined reading direction.

Raphaelle Pia
Raphaëlle Pia was born in the Loire to immigrant parents of the Spanish Civil War. After a year at the Beaux-Arts in Grenoble, JM Pirot workshop, she received training at the center for art, Claude Bernard. Pia then settled in Paris. During the first year of her profession, she studied at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, in the Couturier studio. She paints regularly. Pia first started teaching in 1985 at Auguste Renoir High School of Graphic Arts in Paris, where she taught until 2002. Since then, Pia has devoted herself to painting alone. Painting for Raphaëlle Pia is like playing with the different parts of a toy as a child would.
