About the Item

'Grazing Cattle in Normandy', watercolour on paper, by Genevieve Gallibert (circa 1930s). The artists captures a tranquil scene in Vallée d'Auge, Normandy, which has a typical landscape of the area known for its dairy and apples. It is particularly noted for its cheeses, especially Camembert. Behind the grazing cattle is a traditional Normand barn, now often converted to residential use. It is difficult to date the appearance of the timber framing in France, but by the fourteenth century they became widespread and were found in many regions including Normandy. This timber frame building technique minimised the use of materials, achieving a lightweight form of construction and ease of implementation. One of the cultural close calls of the Allied Invasion of Normandy was the near-total decimation of the Normande breed of cattle. The breed was brought to northeastern France by Viking conquerors of the 9th and 10th centuries. For more than a thousand years, these cattle supported the residents with meat and milk. The artwork is in fair overall condition and is framed and glazed. There are small traces of mould near the edges of the painting not affecting the overall outlook of the artwork. Art restorers can rectify these fairly easily. The artwork is signed by the artist in the lower left hand designating its location (Vallée d'Auge). Please enjoy the many photos accompanying the listing. Upon request a video will be provided. Horses at the Edge of the Pond
By Yves Brayer
Located in London, GB
'Horses at the Edge of the Pond', pencil, ink and watercolour on art paper, by Yves Brayer (1980). Brayer loved the Camargue region of France and painted it widely. The Camargue is a vast, swampy delta near Arles, very exotic, with tall marsh grasses where pink flamingos, black bulls and white horses roam freely. This image depicts three horses in the Camargue near pond's edge. Although there are many horses that still run free in the area, there are cowboys — called gardians — who ride the white horses on the beaches...

On the Path
Located in London, GB
'On the Path', pastel and ink on art paper, by Suzanne Tourte (circa 1950s). Executed with a lively palette of colour, this is a surprisingly sophisticated modern work of art which belies its rather naive style. Flowered fields, green grassy patches, a curved path and blue skies all figure in this engaging landscape with two figures. Newly framed and glazed in anti-reflective glass, this work is in good overall condition. Signed: 'S X Tourte' in the lower right hand. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying the listing. Upon request, a video may be provided. About the Artist: Suzanne Tourte (1904-1979) was a French painter, engraver, medalist, fresco artist, lithographer and illustrator. She was also an excellent vocalist. She studied at the school of Beaux-Arts in Reims while continuing her musical studies at the Conservatoire de la Ville. She chose painting as a profession and returned to Paris to continue her studies. She was friends with artists Yves Brayer and Robert Humblot...
