About the Item

Photorealistic black and white drawing of rock concert goers - Graphite on paper by Andy Mister. Offered framed. The work of Andy Mister explores the boundary between mechanical and manual reproduction. Working with images appropriated from vintage photographs and deftly mimicking the Xerox aesthetic of punk zines and album covers, removing their specific historical context. Mister’s drawings question how meaning is created or lost through the act of “copying.” Mister says of the arrangement of his images, “It's something like my bedroom as a teenager, filled with images clipped from magazines: bands or writers that I admired interspersed with random images I found aesthetically interesting. I am interested in the relationship between images and connections that the viewer creates when encountering them, connections that I cannot control.” Andy Mister received a BA in English Literature and Philosophy from Loyola University of New Orleans, and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Montana. His artwork has been exhibited at Hirschl & Adler Modern, Turn Gallery, Joshua Liner Gallery, Morgan Lehman Gallery, Geoffrey Young Gallery, Kathleen Cullen Fine Arts, Brian Morris Gallery, Dieu Donné, SPRING/BREAK, Lesley Heller Workspace, and City Without Walls. His work has been covered in Frontrunner Magazine, Hyperallergic, and Quiet Lunch. The Cultural Society published Heroes & Villains, a book of his drawings, in the fall of 2014. His first full-length book, Liner Notes, was published in 2013 by Station Hill. His writing has appeared in Boston Review, Colorado Review, Fence, Northwest Review, The Hat, and elsewhere. He has been awarded residencies from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, the Bemis Center, and the Vermont Studio Center. drawing, work on paper, black and white, monochrome, monochromatic drawing, figurative art, figurative drawing, punk, rock, rock and roll, rock music, rock culture, pop culture, gay, gay pride, youth culture, realism, photorealism, contemporary art

Citation - black, white, abstracted figurative, brushed ink on paper
By Andrew Lui
Located in Bloomfield, ON
Brushed ink in grey and black leads the eye up the picture plane in this 55-inch tall painting on paper. The intense movement suggestive of rearing horses in this painterly work is in keeping with Lui's theme of pilgrimage in which he explores the idea of "self-inflicted happiness" as a deliberate response to the melancholy and complexity of life. This painting is floated and framed. Framed Size: 60 × 35 inches Born in Guangzhou, China, Lui participated in the Chinese Cultural Revolution as a member of the Red Guard 1968-70 and then escaped to Hong Kong by swimming. Making his way to Toronto he studied at the Ontario College of Art and became a citizen in the late 1970s. He continued studies in the UK, and Italy where he was drawn to the dynamic Uccello's Battle of San Romano...
